Hooked up with Flyaker, Piscean and Aaron for a WSB and Sand dab adventure. Launched from MBK at 730AM and targeted WSB for 3 hours along with a dozen other boats and a few other yakers. Will have to say that WSB fishing is more fun than sturgeon fishing, but not much.  :smt005 No ghost love but did hook a nice underling which was successfully released. Headed out to deep water for some dabbin. Bagged a pile of small to medium dabs and 2 large ones. Tried Obkook's mother-in-law's Nizakana recipe and it was great!!! Good fishing with Piscean and Flyaker who I haven't fished with in a long time. Really beautiful day on the bay with very little wind and swell. Checked out the MBK sale and they have some nice used clothing and yaks on sale.

Yeah, it was one sweet day to be out on the water off MBK. First paddling trip of 2010 for me :headbang:, and I was stoked to fish with a nice solid crew.
I ended up with a sack of sanddabs as well, mostly hand sized but a couple of nice fat ones mixed in. Having never cooked them before that I can recall I got some tips from the guys on proper cleaning & prep.
My wife was very pleased with the catch, & had madE a mushroom risotto as a side dish. We baked the 'dabs in a bit of oil & then served them with a topper of lemon-garlic butter. :fat
Now I understand what everyone was talking about :smt003

I have been trying to NOT post any carnage pics and didn't think anyone would be interested in pics of sand dabs anyway.  :smt005 But since you asked, this is what was left after last nights feast. Unfortunately they are pan dressed, but the heads are goofy looking anyway.

Good stuff there Scott. You didn't come home empty handed so I'm sure you still had points from
the wife. :smt003

The radio chatter between PB's went something like :

"Hey ya'll, anyone got any seabass today, I heard one came in"
"Um, well, probably. (unintelligible)
"riiiiight, gotcha. Thanks"

 :smt044

I was hoping to hear one screaming reel, from anyone, but it was not to be.

They're catching them (WSB) left & right a couple weeks ago!  Hope they'll be back soon.  Thanks for the report and pictures guys.

NICE, and thanks for the pics... I guess I'm the only one who wants to see Dab pics :) Prolly cause i've never actually ate or fished for them, I always say i'm gonna and never do... Think this pic motivated me to get out there and go dabbing!

Sounds like a really fun trip!  I've caught a few sand dabs over the years around here (Santa Barbara/Goleta area), but never in worth while numbers.  I always release them because I don't think I will catch any more.  Those dabs look tasty!  I wish I could catch them in higher numbers around here.  Are they seasonal?  What do you sue for bait?  How do you know where to fish them...any sand bottom?  word of mouth?  traditional catch areas?

Sounds like there are people who want to fish for dabs, me being one of them?  If conditions permit, anyone want to try this Saturday at MBK?

sandy bottom, 100 feet or so, drag a sabiki with squid bits and you should be on.  We tend to focus on them in the off season but they are around all year.
