Absolutely make him learn about SWB (shallow water blackout) - everyone who dives needs to know exactly what it is and how it occurs.

As for practicing holding his breath, I encourage whatever exercises he wants to pursue outside of the water, and I think it's excellent discipline that can expand his horizons beyond diving or even other physical activity.  It's a zen activity in my mind.

Back in my glory days on the soccer field I'd hold my breath while running behind someone trying to mark me so they wouldn't hear me.  No skid marks on my face...   :smt003

Keep feeding him info and encouragement, Eug, he's gonna be an animal.   :smt001

Check this out....http://jap.physiology.org/cgi/search?sortspec=relevance&author1=Andersson&fulltext=divers&pubdate_year=2009&volume=&firstpage=

that is some serious reading...

If I got it right, it seems to say that there MIGHT be a chance of long term prolonged damage.  Then again the amount of waves cooking their brains while studying the effects might be the cause!
