I have an old Mares Frontiersman, It's about as long as your arm and I have never had any problems with it. It has a Hi and low setting for different applications, High is for shooting Halibut and getting the tip to penatrate through to the sand. Low is for poking around the rocks for lings and such,it won't smash the tip up when it goes through or you miss the shot. I've had both and really like air over bands, Just my personal prefrence, see if you can try both and decide for yourself. Mine was about $200.

I have that Cressi and it works fine. It actually makes hunting rockfish and lings to easy. shorten the cord to  4 feet or so. Its a powerful gun.

I like more of a challenge when i hunt fish so i souped up my polespear with a speargun rubber and put a rubber band on the tines to bring them closer together. When i hit a fish the band slips down the tines and the tines spread apart in the fish...they dont move....even the lings dont move much.

I hated loading my Mares pneumatic with that little thingy-jobber.  It's still sitting in my garage someplace.  Buy a short, cheap band gun for shooting in the rocks.

For real close stuff, just pull one band.....or get the Joel special weenie bands.......and don't forget to let Art take embarrassing pictures of you getting into your suit if you're going the Mooch route.

Hey DaveW what size and model is your mares?
If you use a trident (three or five prongger) you don't need a loader, slip your fingers between the prongs and load.

Back to the original post, if you decide on a pneumatic get one with a power selector (hi/low), size wise 70cm/28" ( like the mares frontiersman or equivalent) it's agood choice.
Good luck!

I changed my little Mares pnuemo to a trident tip a few years ago for ease of loading. Pulling the fork out of a big fish head is work though, but its a great little close up gun.
