Looking at getting a Revolution for the wife.  She really likes the red.  How does the red hold up to normal use?  With appropriate care should fading be a concern?

It will hold up just fine.  A little concern about color red in the ocean  :smt003

You shouldn't get any fading unless you leave it in the son.  My friend has a read one in Hawaii and fishes everyday from it and it hasn't faded at all.

I figure that most of the bleached out boats I see have been abused, but I wasn't sure.  Myself, I'm partial to Ivory Dune (the sand color).

Thanks

I have an older Red Quest, I bought used, so I am not sure how old it is, but I bought in Texas and have never had a problem with fade.

shouldnt have much problem with fading as with all kayaks if you are storing any color outside just put a tarp over it

I remember the Hobie site saying something about UV protection built into the plastic.  Still wouldn't keep it in the sun, warped it twice on hot days myself... :smt012

When doing my initial research on hulls and materials, I remember something about some plastics may have more or less molecular integrity (how strong the molecules bind to each other) depending on how much color is added to them. Thus you may get some that become more brittle, or the shear and tensile strength may be affected, but in reality, it seemed that the degree to which this had an effect was pretty insignificant. There was some negative effect of color based on how hot the material got when exposed to sunlight.

Good luck.

I'm on my 3rd red kayak (no, Sonny the others weren't eaten! :smt003)

I keep my boats out of the sun when they are stored, and I haven't had any fading problems. Only maintenance is a good fresh water rinse after use.

some 303 aerospace protectant will also keep it nice and shiny and new (and slippery!).  hobie provides a small bottle of their UV spray which is similar to 303 with new kayak purchase, well at least i received one when i purchased mine.
