Kayaking Fishing the Trinity River

Has anyone ever don this ?

No, but have thought about it. Pick your drift with care, that river can be treacherous at all flow levels.

ive taken the drift boat over as much of the river as possible and thought of a bunch of spots to do it with a kayak.  I think im going to do it around January sometime.  We could hook up if you wanted to.

Mike, I am going to be up there Jan 10 to the 15 staying at the Indian Creek Lodge. I am not bring my kayak this trip, I am just fishing and getting the lay of the river.

I've been wanted to go down that river for a few years now, when I do, it will be with a drift boat guide.

the river is really nice and one of the most beautiful.  Alot of the water is calm and you see people in pontoon boats out, but other spots can get pretty messy.

Mike, what class rapid would you call messy?

i wouldnd't fish it but Burt ranch gorge is class 4-5, but it is meant for rafting not fishing. the highest class water is probably 2 in the fishing areas, maybe 3 depending where you go. however on the faster waters there generally is an alternite route.

I would take a yak on the trinity in a heartbeat.  Some of the best fishing is in the lower class water there anyway. the best fishing drift probably only hits class 2

Slightly off-topic but a question for the Trinity guys. I have been meaning to hit the Trinity for years but it seems I never get around to it. We have a cabin on the upper Klamath and I'm always anxious to get up there and just breeze through Redding. Anyway I heard it is pretty accessible via car. If I was passing thru or stayed over night where would be a good place to start exploring during steelie season?

To stay overnight Weaverville has the best lodging,
 from there you have many access choices up river or down. Lewiston to Douglas City is a popular drift.

Yeah, that's totally cool, PM your info. Right now though I may not make it up that way until I go up to float the Keno stretch of the Klamath in early spring (flows allowing). Maybe I'll make a long weekend trip though.

Just came across this thread, a Trinity float sounds like a blast.  I've bank fished it at a few spots, but never floated it.  I'll have to start doing a little research on this one to check for put in/take outs.

I used to do Steel Bridge every year on Veterans weekend. Cool spot to lay low, set up camp and work your way upstream. An absolutely beautiful stretch of river.
