Alan, what the cost and advantages for me to convert to a narrow spool on my Penn Jigmaster 500?  Less weight, improved castability?

honestly?  you waste less line when you respool!!!!!!!!!  sorry, i couldn't resist...  :smt003

well, in theory, you could cast farther because there is less total spool mass and less rotational inertia to overcome.  personally, i like the fit and feel.  i think it's better balanced.  you will still need to fish 25# mono or better.  the tolerances between the spool and side plate rings is very sloppy.  i'm sure all of you have gotten 20# mono caught between the spool and side plate before.  on my narrow spool jigmaster, i fish 30#.  it never gets caught.  also, 30# mono will straighten out all of the lighter jig hooks.  you will loose less gear.

personally, i think the narrow jigmaster is the single best reel for kayak fishing.  greased drags will be impervious to water.  you need only turn a sinlge screw to pop off the side plate.  there are no bearings to rust out.  the bushing are easy to clean and lube.  you have a nice power handle option.  please do not set the drags higher than 8 pounds.  that will round off the soft brass gear sleeve.  that's the only down side.  otherwise, it's a great reel.

Damn.... I guess spectra is out of the question for a narrow jigmaster  :smt012

I was hoping the narrow spool had tighter tolerences than the orginal.

Is there no way to reduce the slop between the spool and side plates to prevent line suck?
