I did the squid trip from Bodega bay a couple of years ago and it was a 25 mile ride to the banks. How far out do you have to go in Monterey to get to the 800-1200 foot depths with structure? Is it something that could be reached by kayak?

I caught many Humboldt squids during the San Felipe's trip and would like to catch them again if they're within the paddle/pedal range!  Check out this cool video of these squids hunting fish in Monterey bay:

I went out og Bodega a couple of weeks ago. Lots of squid, i fished until my hands cramped from reeling em up.

what works really good is a 12 to 16 oz diamond jig with silver reflective tape on it. Tie on an extra 7/0 treble hook underneath the hook on the jig.

When a squid hits set the hook as hard as you can several times and they wont come off.

How much did this trip cost per person and how long was the boat ride to the spot?

If someone is doing a Monterey trip let me know. I have been dying to try and my 50W two speed needs a work out. Merv, who is the outfitter in Monterey?

I just went last Sunday.
$90 per person.
$15 rod rental (standard rockfishing/salmon gear is NOT adequate). Unless you have a tuna stick with 80 - 100lb line, rent one from the boat.
$2 per gunny sack (these bags are small. if you can find big burlap sacks bring those)
$25 per squid jig (this is a total rip off. all you need is a sturdy squid jib with a 1lb weight attached. Captain Powers will try his hardest to convice you that his lures are better than yours. Just ignore him.) Gus's Discount Tackle in SF has squid jigs for $7 w/o the 1lb weight.

Bring several BIG coolers and a change of clothes.
These trips are not exactly fun, but they are an experience, and most likely you will load your freezer with all the squid steaks and heads (for bait) that you will ever want.
Captain Powers will cram as many people onto the boat as possible making for a mess of tangled lines, followed by broken lines and lost lures. He's all about making $$$ even if it compromises your enjoyment...
May the fish be mighty and the seas be meek...

I was a squid fishin maniac for a few years. I always went out on New Sea Angler (Capt Rick Powers - Bodega) and New Salmon Queen (Shim - Emeryville). They both went to Cordel Banks; which is a long long boat ride. The best jigs I ended up finding were candycatchers. Squid stuck to them and few got off. Dont know if you can get them anymore...

You must have went out on a weekend on the New Sea angler. I went out on a Wed with about 20 people on the boat.  It was fun, we have a couple of kids trying to haul them in and the only tangles where from a couple of guys with steelhead rods and braid line, but these came out easy enough.

I use a regular deep sea rod and reel and 50lb test. Never had a problem landing the squid. Even the guys with the steelhead rods landed their share, that braid must have been 100lb test. My biggest one was almost as a long as me at least 5.5 feet and about 75 lbs, from a few years ago.

bring your own rods the ones you rent on the boat are junk and will ruin your trip.

nice pics, thats a typical haul.

It a 30min ride to the squid grounds out of Monterey or Moss. The squid are always there--just nobody fishes for them during RF season. Because it's waay too much work for crab bait. But when there's nothing else to catch (besides dabs)....

They don't "keep" very well. You have to eat it fresh, which isn't a bad thing I guess. But don't expect to freeze it and have a good squid meal in a month. I'd venture to say that 60% of the humboldts caught are discarded or used for crab bait.
