From the chat on channel 69, it sounds like all were doing quite well at the pinnacles.

My daughter Ema, and i poked around the cove.  it was her first time out fishing in a kayak, and we were in the Malibu 2 XL.

The Malibu was only semi-rigged.  I didn't have rivets that were long enough to mount the rod holders, and my fishfinder finally gave up the ghost .  all this of course discovered at 8:30pm the previous night, as I'm scrambling to get things together for Ema's initial go-out.

the day was not super nice, but we had a good start weather wise, Even a few rays of glorious sunshine around 7:30am.

We paddled out past the kelp and Ema immediately;y hooked up with something BIG. She was gaining some line, then it would zip out.  "Whatever you do, Ema do NOT tighten your drag!!" I instructed.  She looked over her shoulder and said "Dad, I have no idea how to tighten the drag, so don't worry about it!"

Smart-ass 11 yr old.

this is what she got, about 4 ft long or so.

After one more of these doggies, we went inside and found a steady, if slow, pick of small rockfish.  here' Ema's first Kayak stringer.

We came in early cause she was cold and her butt hurt.  i think she did pretty darn good for a first go-out. she sat the kayak well and was not intimidated, even with a thrashing shark  a foot away.  Can't wait till she is paddling on her own, though the Malibu worked real well for us.  Wouldn't want to take it on any extended paddles, but with two people, we could really get it moving.  here's my semi-rigged portrait.

How did the rest of you guys do?  It was great to see you all and I apologize for not fishing right next to you.  It really helped Ema to see everyone there, nothing mysterious about what we were doing, she just wasn't ready to go that far out yet.

aside from fishing, this is another reason why I love getting up early...who needs Starbucks when you can just witness mother nature waking up :smt002

the sun trying to break free....

R.I.P

newbie Eric follows the lead of Randy and Pat...

at the hot spot: eric, fuzzy tom, jim,ed,randy and pat working one of the pinnacles...

eric gets introduced to his first under ling......

a nice surprise...a starry/rosy pulled up from 119 feet of water :smt002 (caught and released)

Henry hooks up and gets "free towing".....

here's randy looking for the elusive cabezon...

Team Tarpon: Ed and Jim and a fine catch. I'm hoping that these guys stop "lurking" on the forum and start posting :smt002 These guys have been doing really good and have been putting some serious time on the water. Good going fellas :smt023

my take home: 2 lings,a nice copper and some olives....

the mooch stringer: all caught with the modified candle fish iron lure (with a bucktail single hook in place of a treble)

as we came in...these gentlemen paddled out with their "puncture proof" inflatable raft :smt011  I can only hope that they made it back safe  :smt017

Special thanks to Pat and Randy for showing us around their backyard  :worship  :worship  :worship

Today's fishing is blast for me, Indeed!

Everyone caught many fish such as blues, blacks, rocks, lingcods, red, oliver. Joel, Randy, Pat, Allen are pros of kayak fishing. I learned a lot from them in this trip. Joel gave me two home-made lures, which were so effective. I caught many fish with his lures. Stillwater cove is a beautiful place as well as an excellent spot for fishing. As quoted by Joel, he would like to move down to Carmel. :-)

I had two big hits in my life! One of them took me ~15 minutes and the fish refused to come up. Tom came to help. At then end, my fishing line broke and the fish took off, with hook and lure too.

Thanks again for your helping and coaching.

Next fishing trip, I will bring my camera with me. I saw many great pictures.

Wow great report guys, sorry I missed out. I woke up Sunday morning and my left eyes was fused shut. It seems I got something in it doing yard work Saturday. Yet another reason to not do yard work!

Allen, looks like you got a real fisherperson there, don't introduce her to Jelly  :smt007

I sent Eric a PM, but for everyone else, this site is awesome.  It's been posted on the list before.

http://nmviewogc.cr.usgs.gov/viewer.htm

As you get it down to the area you want it to focus on, go to the bar on the right, click elevations and then "Contours" and then "NOAA Depth" so that it begins to show to you offshore contours.

Then just run your cursor over the area that you want the GPS coordinates of, look on the bottom left of the map (not the screen) and there they are for you to copy into your GPS....... :smt003

Technology can be good.

Not the best picture that I've ever taken on the water but here is an image of Mooch with the morning's first boated ling.
He landed this nice fish while Randy was being taken for a ride by some big fish that popped off a minute later, only to be followed by Ed going for an even longer ride before being left with a lonely bait fish.

I was thinking that fish were popping off my jigs because I was using a barbless hook, since I only wanted a ling and the rockfish are crazy right now and I wanted to be able to readily release them.  Turns out fish were poppling off all sorts of hooks.

Thanks to all for sharing their morning with us....... :smt004

I'll be smoking my nice vermillion and the few others that we kept later today....... :fat

Pat - what's your address? ....I'm coming over  :smt002

Please warn the people of Carmel that the mooch will be visiting the area more often......he just needs to learn how to read a street map so he doesn't get lost again  :smt011 (this why I never made it to the Boy Scouts)

Eric - I'm thinking you hooked up on a really big shark. You had 20# mono on your reel - it would take a BIG fish to break that line. I'm thinking Randy and Ed got pulled by a shark as well. I was watching Ed and it seemed like he was getting towed at a steady pace - just like it was casually swimming away  :smt118

I didn't really get a good look at it - but I assume it's a vermillion.

I have never seen one that orange.  Beautiful looking fish though.
