Went out last night and got into position around 4:30 and dropped my three hoop nets along the mission Bay Marina Jetty.  Water was flat calm, no wind, excellent.  I pulled them up a few times before sunset, and nothing in them.  A local came by, and was a little annoyed I had his spot, but told him there is plent of room and I did not mind.  Theo would up being a good dude.  As soon as the sun went over the horizon, I pulled up a bug, 1/4" short, but I am stoked. Next net, a keeper!  then a skate in the third.  Paddle back and make the loop again.  I got a million of them, just undersize, and right at 8:00 when I was running out of steam, I managed another nice keeper.  Theo said that mackerel is a better bait than the anchovies I was using, but that anchovies are infact a great bait.  I did not bring bait to freshen up the cages, and my ratio went down hill fast, and Theo said it was because of the old bait.  Going out on a boat tomorrow night, then hitting some local kelp on Saturday, then maybe hooping Sat night for some more bugs.  Tuesday, we chartered a boat out of Dana Landing, Rock N Roll Sportfishing.  Captain Brian is a top notch guy.  I caught a very large sheephead male, which I had been trying to catch for 6 years, so it made it all worth it.  We ended up with less than limits, but all the boats out were reporting the same.  I did catch a tree fish, very beautiful fish.  I will post up picks when I get home next week, and keep adding to this thread through the weekend.

More work to pull thow you have to pull quick and non stop or they get out and you cant just leave your traps to fish. But way easier to eat.

Can you use a crab snare on those bugs or are they just too fast?

I was just down there. Don't miss OEX Kayak fishing on Santa Clara St/Ave ? on Mission Bay. Huge selection of kayak fishing specific gear. I believe they also have free Demos.

I saw a number of fishin yaks off La Jolla and a good number night fishing in San Diego Bay out of Shelter Island. They are still catching mackeral and bonita off the Shelter Island Fishing pier They use a glow stick as a bobber at night.
If your lady is with you I highly recommend a late dinner at Island Prime and/or "C" Level for a little romance. Incredible night view of San Diego Bay

Went out Friday night with the GF.  We ended up with limits for both of us, the biggest bug going maybe 2 pounds.  I was going to hook up with some of you down there, but threw my back out big time loading the yaks, and was imobile the rest of the trip.  I will post up some pics off the charter and my first night out.  My camera took a swim on Friday night, so no pics of the big haul.  Great time, and lots of good access, might have to put a bug fest trip together once I can get surgery and healed up.  MOOCH can come too if he brings the man van!

Well, most of you have seen how I roll, yaks way up high on top of my F-150, and at the back of the truck, often you have to step up on the bumper.  I already had a bad back, and am slated for surgery for a discectomy and possible fusion towards the end of February.  I might have to invest in a trailer, where I don't have to lift them as high, but then I can't boogie at 80 MPH on the highway.  What to do, what to do?

Oh man, Rich, sorry to hear about your back.

I went out of La Jolla Shores on Sunday morning for nada.  Met a friendly local who showed me spots, but he couldn't get anything either.  Maybe next time, when your back is better.

Waves were pretty big down there over T-day.  The La Jolla Shores launch avoids the worst of it but still gets some.  I got caught by a big one on the way in and didn't manage to punch back through it or surf it in, but I was ready for that with everything stowed or lashed.  No harm no foul.
