I'm probably the one that mentioned the "if you can't eat it" rule a while back.  We use that rule up at NWKA for our AOTY.   The rule doesn't mean that you have to keep the fish you enter for AOTY, rather we are simply trying to discourage people from chasing things like ESA listed species for AOTY.   I guess people are just a bit more touchy about native fish up here.

That said, you guys do what ever you want, I'll see to it that the program reflects those rules.

I think since AOTY works so good, we should change it to make it a pain in the butt. Why leave something alone that works! In fact, maybe we should have official verification stations positioned throughout the North State with DF&G officers acting as judges. Yeah, that's it....that's the ticket!

I just thought I'd give my opinion....since no one asked for it.

Looks like suggestions about changing AOTY meet with quite a bit of negativity (as opposed to just feedback).  Too bad...

Thanks for the question and suggestion, Ben.   :smt001

well now that we're all talking about it, how about we clarify how a fish should be measured too?  mouth open? closed?  fork length x a multiple of 1.148?

no worries, i don't mind criticism, constructive or not.  i'm sure that my definition of "angler" doesn't match the textbook definition, or even the definition of the majority of the fishing population.

i'll keep releasing my bigger fish (except halis) and its definitely each person's decision whether to CPR or CKP.  let's call this idea "SHELVED" and go out and fish!

as for the question about if you can't eat it, it doesn't count, looks like I was mixed up with AOTY north.  I think the reason I got confused is I thought I read it in some article somewhere (maybe something PAL wrote?) now I can't find it anymore.

Ben, I think you need to fish more. :smt044 Anyway changing the Aoty ? Can anyone tell me why you want it changed ? Should you start your own AOTY? Dont you think Bill has enough to do as it is?

So, feedback is negativity if you don't agree with the feedback? FWIW, I will be signing up for AOTY next year even though I don't get out often, which probably means less likelihood of C&R if it's a legal catch.

i actually don't want it changed. i'm fine with it the way it is, otherwise i would not compete in it. however, i do like being progressive, so i do not mind at all proposing new wacky as heck ideas.

I think of it in this manner:  AOTY is our major (website based) tournament and is apparently well known even outside of our little community.  C&R is a conservation issue.  If it appears that NCKA supports C&R, it reflects well on us as a group.  I believe that most NCKA members do support C&R - its just a way of showing it off.  But I agree with majority rule, so if the majority of members (esp AOTY participants) think that we should keep things the way they are, then that's what we should do.

Howard....we need to change that negative attitude of yours  :smt002

I don't know where that came from - especially since I agree with the way AOTY is.  I just pointed out that it seems like some people get pretty defensive and kinda jump others for suggesting possible changes.  I don't know why anyone, Ben OR myself in this case, needs to feel like negative energy is coming back their way for something they wrote.  It seems there's been way too much of that lately here.  I often read things on here and find myself having a negative thought.  I always try to analyze it and make my best effort to put forth something positive no matter what first struck me.  I'm not perfect on that, but I have made a point of doing it and I've benefited from doing so - personally, spiritually and through direct complements from other members.  That aspect of NCKA, the ability to benefit from putting something positive on the board, is what I enjoy most here, so it's getting to be a bummer to see the negative energy creeping in.

My bad if I mis-read it at all.   :smt001

If this is any indication of your political beliefs, I know how you vote.  :smt003

*Just for clarification all, this is not an attack nor is it negativity, just an attempt at levity - albeit, probably a poor one.

I think AOTY is fine the way it is. But then again like Ben I am a Fan of Croquet and like a little Twist. I think we should take the top Ten every year and buy them each a six pak sit them down and let them make any changes or not.

Three rules I would support are

1)No Blood and Guts Photos (make it look like we released them)

2)No threatened or endangered Fish (would probably effect Steelhead Fishing the most)

3)No fish from the Russian would count unless you live within 100'

Group IQ is inversely proportional to the size of the group.

A Steelhead always knows where he is going, but a Man seldom does.

Sorry Mr. Dilbeck, they are not, and no one can figure out how I vote, not even me!  I just make it up as I go along  :smt002

Plus every side of the political spectrum is guilty of proposing wacky as heck ideas!

Beer? How about two bottles of tequila apiece? Might thin the herd out for the next hot bite.
