From what I could tell based upon what didn't go down with the camera, the plastic attachment piece just unfastened by itself.  It was a kind of socket/plug that "locked" by the expansion/compression of a buttom on each side that matched up with the socket.  It didn't break, it just failed to hold.  I think the float on the actual camera strap is definitely the way to go in the future.  The strap attachment on the Canon D-10 appears to be really solid and it's aluminum vs. plastic.

Thanks for the clarification.  I have the same type of connection which connect my camera trap to the float.  I'll do some modifications on mine to make sure it won't fail.
