With the coast looking rough, decided to take my socal brother for some trout action.  Plan was to meet up with others at 0800, didn’t get there until 0925, but lo and behold, our companions had just gotten there also!  Funtastic weather.

We both had to slather on the ZnO, clear warm day had us sweating by midday.  The altitude was an asskicker.  I literally felt out of breath and had a headache all day long.  Wasn’t complaining though what with weather like that in late October!  Smattering of fall colors beautified the landscape.

Bendo on a feisty trout.

I think kayakers outnumbered the boaters.  It wasn’t crowded by any means, but somehow this trio of large-waisted anglers inconsiderately managed to run right over my brother’s rigs.  He lost a ton of line and two trolling lures.

Had a really pleasant shore lunch, then went back out for the PM bite, which turned out to be much better than the AM bite.  Something about cloud cover and a slight ripple on the water lowers piscine inhibitions, and they went on the chew.  Both rainbows and browns were hitting the kastmasters.  Gold and chrome with sparkle tape both produced, but they preferred the gold.  Nothing of size, but it was my first brown.

Remember this guy?!  He brought his dive gear but didn’t deploy it, smart move.  Super clear visibility made it tempting, but H20 mighty chilly.

Afternoon cool begged some coverup.  Also helps with the Ted Kaczynski look.  Bagging another brown.

I think that’s the KC Lodge in the background.  Really pretty area, will have to visit.

We only bagged six that showed significant hook damage, otherwise CNR.  Fishsniffer pose of the browns, notice crazy difference in coloration.  Guess which one was the male, shot milt everywhere.

Yummmmm, trout.

Didn’t catch anything above stocker size.  Did see one REALLY nice fish caught.  Kind of mindboggling actually that a fish that size would come out of a lake that small and shallow.

I had one of the browns for dinner tonight, panfried in oil and butter with salt, and onion and mushroom sautee.  Pretty tasty fare, just like the SFGATE article suggests.

I also cooked up one of the stocker rainbows in the same fashion.  Very much a lesser quality fish, would even call it slightly mushy in texture, plus just doesn't have that appealing pink hue, like the browns.  Gonna save the rest for the smoker!

I thought about not posting a report.  Ultimately decided to post as a gesture of appreciation to those who gave me some pointers on fishing the sierras this weekend.  Some familiar, some new to me, each member who replied or talked to me was pretty cool about their information at this put and take fishery.  Hopefully this post and others encourages a spirit of continued or increased contribution and camaraderie on the board.

now, get out and fish

Im such a trout ignoramus, I dont know. Part of me wants to guess the chrome one, but on the flipside the darker one looks like the jaws a lil more hooked.

Love me some high sierra lake action.  Looks gorgeous with action to boot!  Way better than how I spent my Saturday.

Beautiful pics. Thanks Martin.

I have to get my trout groove on. Haven't fished for them since I was a teenager, but those are some great memories.

Looks like you all had a great time. I was back up on Sun and the conditions changed. Wind was at a dull roar. Maybe 10-12. Gusts 15+.Small white caps occasionally. Was blowing harder in the morn. Started to pick up again in the eve. Same report on the fish. Caught Brook, Brown, and the ever popular and populated Rainbow. Was bait fishing and my buddy caught a crawdad with worm. Kept only what I was forced to. I think I caught the last good day of the year up there. It will be snowing soon and the report is for mid 30's for the high from here on out. Thanks for the report, before and after.

The one in my right hand was the jizzmeister.  The one in my left hand was a female.  Do any Fish nerds know whether trout display sexual dimorphism, other than the kyphe?

I hope there's one more Saturday weather window, although I think you're right rob.  Would like to hit the 88 corridor one more time.
