I had work up in Crescent City today, so I threw a rod in the car and headed to the mouth of the Smith when I was done with work duties around 3:30.  The tide had turned at 1:15 and was draining off fast when I joined about two dozen of my closest pals (average age 60...) for some shoulder to shoulder lure-pitching for 30 minutes or so.  Word was that someone had broken a fish off just before I got there, but there was no action during my stint.  I hucked a 3/4 ounce gold Kastmaster with a big, fat, ugly treble hook - de-barbed though, so I was sportier than required.   :smt004  I was promising the fish gods that I would release a fish if I was lucky enough to catch one.  I wanted to feel the wrath and/or respect of the crowd that would've occured with such a move, and, I admit, I wanted to come back here and wave my nature-boy flag too!    :smt002  I didn't hookup though, and it's probably because the fish gods suspected I woulda barbecued it!  :smt005

To fish, and to talk about fishing, and to relay information that I have come to know and reverence that I feel in my heart - these are all parts of a fishing report for me, and they always have been.  It may not work for some (I still respect you, SuperBioDude  :smt008), but it works for others, and that's a part of me that I like.  I'll continue to refine my crude and sometimes seemingly selfish ways, and hopefully that will appease the angst of those who I want to include as part of an audience that I care about and feel a kinship with.

The Smith is an awesome river, and the fish there are as beautiful as the redwoods and the rocky banks of the stream.  It's looking more and more like a symbol in my eyes these days.  A symbol of times past and of changing times.  We'll see what happens, and I think we all share the hope that things that beautiful and free don't disappear right before our eyes...

***************************************************************

The rivers are closing tomorrow due to low flows.  That's always good news for Nature Boy.   :smt001

Thank Eric,

It's really nice to see the Mouth of the Smith river again. Even if its through your camera lens. I hope next season it would be open for some harvesting. :smt002 Then  the 10 hour drive will be worth it for me!

thanks for the report and pic/vid.

The Smith is THE place.  I would have loved for you to feel the love of legal fishing nature-boy :smt003.  Remember to bring your a-game to the swift, gin-clear waters of the Smith.  Good luck next time,

Use that magic silver and blue Cleo next time. Or just scale down the size of your KastMaster. I've gotten down to 1/12th OZ. and SLAYED fish with that before. Copper, baby, copper.
