I know this forum is for fishing but, is there anyone out there that duck/goose hunts? Opening weekend coming up and I was looking for somewhere to go, and someone to go with. I have a couple customers up north that are rice farmers, but they have not flooded the fields yet. I hate going to the refuges, especially opening weekend. If any of you want to hook up and try somewhere let me know. Here is a picture from last year on my pasture pond, dry now also, and an unlucky Cinnamon Teal.

I try to get my fill of birds during the season, the yak is a great way to get on them.  Hope you guys managed a few on the opener, I spent the weekend setting up a petting zoo/pumpkin patch/farm for my kid's 3rd birthday party.

I'm with you on the refuge system, I'd rather do my own thing and avoid the crowds.  Let's keep a hunting thread going to keep in touch.

I used to hunt Morro Bay, and now I hunt in Sonoma.  I've hunted three days this week after work with very few birds flying during shooting hours.  I had three circling my spread the other night, but they turned away at the last minute.

After shooting hours hours, they all come pouring in.  I'm bummed about the time change, as I won't be able to hunt after work anymore.

I managed to shoot a wood duck last night that I jumped as I was paddling, my first wood duck ever.  I'm going to try and go tomorrow morning and hopefully there will be more birds flying.

The deep water ship channel in Sac is a great place to go right before dark.  Paddle down the channel south out of the turning basin, and bang away at the ducks going back to the yolo bypass.  Pretty easy paddle, and while you are going, toss a J-7 broken back out the back for stripers.

Is it OK to shoot in the channel? I always worry about someone official saying something about me carrying my gun around. Actually at several different places I would like to go.

They hunt the causeway, and as long as you are far enough south away from the buildings, you should be ok.  I never have had a problem, but not 100% sure that you wont get into trouble if the wrong person on the wrong day said something.  This is California, and for what it is worth, you can't do anything without it being against the law somehow.

Any navigable waters can legally be hunted, including flooded private property.  As long as it's deep enough to float a canoe, it's legal.  That said, if you touch the bottom with a foot, paddle, or decoy anchor, then you are trespassing.

I just finished a custom camo paint job on my pro explorer, it came out pretty sweet.  I'm putting it to the test up at Lower Klamath this weekend and will let you guys know how it goes.

Hey hunters,
I have not fired a gun from my yak before. Any pointers? Only shoot 10-2? If you shoot 3 or 9 will it knock you over sideways? Am I just worrying over nothing? Was thinking about test shooting in some shallow water somewhere this weekend. I guess I will know soon enough.
