I am totally depressed that there are no tourneys in the foreseeable future.  I have been scratching my head for ideas, and not coming up with much.  There are these things however:

1)  The Mendo SBA hold a striper tourney every year in April.  I would love to get some yaks up to that event, and I would LOVE to see a yak beat the PBs and win the tourney.

2) Any interest in an Ab tourney in April.  Money between friends format, with a camp-out and ab pig-out?  Spear a couple fish....hmmm?

Thoughts?

Sean

Why not a sturgeon derby out of Buck's Landing sometime in Dec or Jan?

If everyone's holiday schedules permit, we can do it in Dec and have a last chance at the sturgeon and striper jackpots.

We can make it a simple MBF (money between friends) derby -- only $10 to buy in.  Afterwards, we can warm up at the Buck's Landing saloon, tell stories, and use their BBQ pit to cook our lunch.  We have an open invitation from the owner.
Winner - 2023 ARW Halibut Derby "King of the Wall"
Winner - 2018 ARW Halibut Handline Derby
Winner - 2013 Doran Beach Crabfest
2nd Place - 2012 Alameda Rockwall Halibut Derby
Winner (Biggest Rock Crab) - 2010 Half Moon Bay Crabfest
Winner - 2009 Alameda Rockwall Halibut Derby
Winner - 2009 Paradise Halibut Hunt
Winner - 2007 NCKA Angler of the Year
Winner "Grand Slam" - 2007 Bendo @ Mendo III

As for option 2, I am not a Sturgeon fisher but Stripers sound good. How about a kayak derby at Mendocino a month or so before the PB Derby as well as the derby itself?

I'm in for a sturgeon derby at Buck's... That was a lot of fun last year... maybe we'll even get a nice day this year.

I'd be in for the others as well... but with this rain I've got sturgeon on my mind now.

Down here in 'sunny' Santa Clara  :smt003

How about a Coyote Point-Tubes Derby? I hear all this talk of Stripers, but no one gets one first-hand. Somethings fishy, pardon the pun. I am off to San Luis this Sunday, but would be up for something in the Bay next week.

At some point we HAVE to do a tourney out of Bodega.  I am thinking halibut.  Maybe next year.  I am down for any tourney ideas.  Sturgeon would be awesome.  Count me in.

The surf launch at Doran Park Beach was sympatico when I was there a few weeks ago for kayak training. The current out of the channel was not too bad if you would rather to launch inside the harbor--we practiced ferrying across it and the eddylines and the tidal race was small--merely a riffle. I'll bet there is more than halibut in the outer harbor--lings and rockfish for sure I'd think. I saw Lots of people fishing from the jetty on the beach side. Didn't see any fish caught--but I couldn't pay too much attention either. Most of the boats, both launched at the ramp and from the harbor, didn't linger in the bay though they went out to the South somewhere. If that means the bay is too pressured or they were looking for Salmon outside I dunno.

How about a Bodega Bay crabbing tournament?  If we do it soon enough we could make it a crab/rockfish combo tourney.
