We found this quaint lil spot in a Redwood gorge, so we parked, cooked, ate, drank, _ _ _ _ _ _ _ and slept there.

Ben had the hot stick on friday....he gets there late, and then he commences to DOMINATE!(once again!) I caught a few of these and a handful of those, but nothing of quality.

funny you bring that up!!  :smt010  i pinned on a FAT 16"Greenling (3/0 ringed mutu hook w/treble stgnr.) Searched for PRIME STRUCTURE and on the third drop, going downhill from 30ft to 50ft, I felt a SLURP.....not setting hook, just reeling up slowly, i felt the most heaviest thing on the end of the line, it scared me.....I knew something BIG and FEMININE had that Greenling, but did not know if it was sideways or ? in its mouth, so i dropped my pole tip, allowing her to position the bait and SWALLOW as DIRECTED!.....then as I fought her up and down for what felt like 10min, BenZan sees my pole bendo from the grip into the drink. I whispered to start the video, cuz i'm about to bring this bitch up to color, and then the "BINK" happened as it FREIGHT-TRAINED me down.
This MONSTER was the heaviest fish I've EVER FOUGHT(and lost) I felt like quitting&crying, but just knowing that she is still there, will keep me going back for more.....and to try and get my set-up back!

Argh, BUMMER! What do you think the loss was due to . . .abraded line, too low a test line or.....?

it was a user error......i tried to horse it when it was not ready to give up.....drag to tight(again!)
I like to keep my drag set hard at first, so that i can pull it from it's comfort zone, then as i prepare to handle it, i try to soften the drag a bit, incase it wants to make a last ditch effort to keep from getting its picture plastered on the WorldWideWeb! :smt013   :smt010

I know some more experined-than-me fishermen say set your drag once & leave it, but for all the bottom fish I catch I end up fiddling with the drag all the time. A little less for the big pull, then a tad more to regain line....it's something else to do :smt003

So, no chicken wings under the tent floor this time, eh? Or was that a different spot you camped? :smt044

Alan Tani told me to set it to 2-3lbs and leave it!  "that should handle ANY ocean fish except for a pelagic" said the master.......they say don't stick metal objects into the toaster oven, but i do that too!  :smt005
Ben wised up when camping with the "self proclaimed Ambassador of Goodtime" he slept in his truck and locked the doors! :smt012

Camping is great there, a bit $ but the guy is real nice and the Redwoods are giants. The Ling , and most other fish, was caught on a 4 oz little chrome bar tipped with some stinky-ass squid, we were fishing in the red tide, so I think smell had a lot to do with it, and I rub the lure all over the fish I caught. One more time??
