I've had lots of problems with seals/sealions there (Soberanes) in the past.  Had your exact story happen to me 3 times in one day until I moved and multiple times other days.  Whatever it was, exciting isn't it!

I would put my money on furbag.  There are ghosts there, and I've seen quite a few soupfins.  I also wouldn't be surprise this time of year if it was a blue shark or even some other sort of pelagic.  Soberanes point and the Garrapata area get a lot of California Current water this time of year and not coastal upwelling water.  This means that there is a lot of stuff moving inshore.

when i fished there with alain i too hooked into something big and strong and after my hook was straightened and had a long fight all i could do was wonder what the hell it was. i had it so close but not close enough to see in the good vis water and i was stumped. there is something there and it aint normal.

i remember fishing with Pat down in carmel a zillion years back (ok maybe 2 or 3)...i had a what i thought was a furbag nab a fish, drop it nab it again and drop, when it nabbed it just under the yak, i got to see the big black tail before it dropped the olive i had. She saw it too just a little while later....
