Add 5 more hours for me... Only one rod, though. The other one pulled up a dozen sanddabs. Yum. Really wanted one o' them WSB or B'cudas, tho.

AArgh Chris! Dammit! Sorry. I really thought it was gonna happen for you. It will soon. The bank of mojo only accepts a limited amount of big deposits before it has to pay out, and youre there.

Lost a VERY big fish!  I was out with lapulapu on his boat for a little easier day.  The other day Alex had informed me that I could fish WSB with more than two rods so I grabbed the only other rig I had, a Calcutta reel that I hadn't used for over 4 years.  It had a long topshot of 40 lb mono but didn't really recall what the backing was.

A very big fish grabbed this line and started peeling line out.  It felt like I had hooked a train. I'm sure it was way bigger than the one I caught a week ago.  As the 100 feet of mono played out I got to PowerPro underneath and thought "Oh No! This only looks like 20 lb test."  As the braid went out it started grabbing more and more as it seemed to be cutting into itself on the spool.  The line tension rapidly built and then... POW.  It was over.  I was so bummed.  If only he had hit my other rigs I thought.  I had just put a thousand feet of 55 lb. Samurai braid on one of them.  Guess it underscores the necessity of knowing exactly what you have on your reels. These fish are unforgiving.

Sorry for your loss.   Must got your heart pumping fast when you know a BIG one on the other end of the line.  Thanks for the reports guys.

The one I lost, I had 25# mono with 30# leader.  It was not supposed to hit that rod, but the other one with Pline and mucho line on the spool.  It just goes to show if it will hit any of them, it will be the weaker link that it does hit.

Yeh, after it happened, I kept thinking, I never should have put that "weak link" rig out there...but then I would not have even gotten the take down.

Doug,
Think of it this way.  Aside from the armada of dolphins we saw that I thought were being chase by a shark, your zeeeenging line and that loud pop from it breaking was the only excitement we had all day.  Me and Danny were talking about your fish swimming with all that 300ft of line and wondered if it will eventually get all tangled up in it by next weekend.  Maybe it will be so tired by then I can reel it in with my fingered drag reel.  :-) Guaranteed to put a half pound of pressure.

You can add me and Danny's hours of MBK WSB stinko.  I put in at least 40hrs so far OTW and no WSB yet and Danny has put in about 30.  But, I've met a lot of people since then and learned a lot about fishing that area.  Looking forward to fish with you guys again whenever whatever......  Maybe by then we will both be ready with our new rigs.

I think I'm done fishing Monterey for the year.  The WSB action seems to have thinned out so much, it's probably not worth going out again until next year.  I was one-for-one with WSB.  Now, I'm one-for-three.  But... you can't blame us for trying.  The pay off is big.

Added another 8 hours of skunkiness today. But it was creepy flat with no boats....very calm before the storm stuff. Damn jellies are too thick.

And, I am thankful for hooking up with two this year, the first the kelp took, the next was a break off.  But am very grateful to have bent rods with the ghost this year, twice.

wow-  no fish, but lots of excitement.   Its just amazing what can be down there taking the line.  I guess it is assumed to be a WSB, but one really never knows what is taking, or if WSB, just how big it is.   Very exciting read.

Skunk's not so bad.   I was on my way to fish, and car blew out.    Going to cost big bucks to fix or total the car.   I would rather be skunked on the water.
