Lots of us drive Higway one south every week to get to our prestine fishing grounds. I never really take the time to think how many people loose there lives here year after year. Just got news that one of my close freinds lost control of his motorcycle just south of the Bixby bridge and lost his life. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family. Botom line is dont take life for granted!!!! Drive careful my freinds especially when in this area.

Sorry to hear about your friend Andy.I agree about the 1...I had a very close call earlier this season on the way down to Sur.A medicine ball sized rock feel on the road driving south just before Lucia. The larger rock stopped on the pavement, but a volleyball sized chunk broke off and fell right in front of my truck. My initial reaction was to swerve right...BAD IDEA! That decision would have been instant death.Luckily, I corrected to the left and the rock went under my axle without making contact.I scared myself bad enough to come to the conclusion that anything in the road down there will be run the F@$k over before I drive off a cliff.

Man, I'm sorry about the news Andy.
I am always more concerned driving to/from the launch spot than I am on the water.
I've had some close calls with moose & shopping carts, just name a few things. Once a wetsuit flew out of the truck in front of me, another time it was the lid from a huge rubbermaid crate. Going 70mph that stuff can be really frightening

you just never know what might be in the road right around that turn.
Maybe that's why I tend to drive like my dad more & more...........

Tragic but good reminder.  Sorry for your loss

Last trip, on drive home, I was getting very impatient behind this young lady who was working her crackberry, starbucks, and lipstick all while actuating the radio in a Volvo stationwagon.  It po'd me something fierce b/c I was tired cranky and hungry!  We ended up having to tail her from Andrew Molera all the way to the Carmel Safeway b/c of traffic in opposing direction AND she wouldn't take any turnouts.  In spite of (or maybe because of) white knuckle terror, pisciform insisted that I just chill out, and probably saved our hides.

On another occasion last season, I drove Kevin drove down to Limekiln after work on a Friday to fish Saturday early.  It had been a long work week.  He fell asleep, I was half way there behind the wheel, yet super anxious to make it there and hit the sack.  Not a good combination.  We made it, but I remember thinking "this is just dumb..."  Major darwin award moment.

Man, that is terrible news.  I think Eric said it best:

Stay strong, Andy, and help out his family if you can - the NCKA way.   :smt056

Aaron is spot on - drivers need to know how they are going to react to a situation before it happens.  That's something my grandpa engrained in me when I started driving.  There is no animal/boulder/item/etc. worth swerving over if greater danger looms ahead.

Bummer news, Andy. I almost bought it last year at Anderson Reservoir, which is why I am super cautious about when and where I go anywhere (kayaking or not). Down to one truck after totaling the car.

Very sad. Condolences. That road is a killer, particularly of the young and active. Brings to mind the fellow soldier who lost his life at the Bixby Bridge way back when during my DLI days. So very sorry to hear about your loss.
