Lake Sonoma is bow-only most of the year--correct?

This year they are completely eliminating the Shotgun Slug Season at Lake Sonoma.  I

t's archery only from November 28 through March 26th.

They cite short staffing / funding at DFG and the Corps of Engineers as the reason they could not coordinate the shotgun hunt this year.

They were pretty lean but I grilled some of the backstraps and the tenderloins tonight and they were very good... tender and mild flavor.  The family devoured it.

There's plenty of water running and springs back in those hills... along with a hearty acorn crop, it's really a piggy paradise.

I have been wanting a good reason to go to a bow hunt for big game (with the exception of my 12 and 20 gauge over-and-unders for wing shooting and if pigs might ever fly I should be well prepared). It seems I now have my field though I may be up to it in heart but not skill. At least it will end up with a good walk in the woods and who can decry that? I do need to purchase (with typical California delay by law) a powerful sidearm in case a strong boar should consider my broad point an opening bid rather than a final offer. My current top side arm load: a USP 40 S&W is not sufficient as Eric has so well pointed out with his more than ample pistol--I still and will continue to admire that shooting Eric.

Not to hijack this at all Eric. Bravo sir. I hope you smoke some--my brother in low smokes some of his kill and it is very, very good.

No sidearms allowed for the lake sonoma hunts.  How's that for excitement!

I got my bow out for the first time in about 15 years... tuned it up and upgraded the sight, rest, arrows, and release to the modern era... shoots like a champ.  Todays archery technology is quite impressive... but I figured I'd rehab my old bow for starters.

As far as smoking... I'm sure i'll be trying it all kinds of different ways.  The tenderloins (inside loins) were like butter tonight.

Nice job Erik.   I'm afraid those closest I'll ever get to something like that is ordering a half a pig from a local farmer.

BTW, I would have thought we'd have at least one NJ native among the bunch that would have brought this up already..

The sow was shot right in the heart, which of course caused the old song by Bon Jovi "Shot through the heart... but you're too late..."  to be stuck in our feelbe caveman minds all night.

I believe the actual lyrics are "shot through the heart and you're to blame".

Shows you just how far our feeble caveman minds have degraded... nothing funnier than singing a song and seriously thinking you know the lyrics and having them wrong.
