Hobie Dave, Daviator and I met up at Paradise this morning around 7:30.  Conditions were great.  The sun was shining, and the wind was really light.  We tried frozen Sardines but didn't have any action.  I went over to the pilings and looked for bait and was able to get a couple of nice shiners and some other unidentifiable little brown bait.  I also got a couple of pretty good size Mackerel.  Dave continued the hunt with the frozen bait and decided to throw out the Sabiki and see if there were any bait in the deep water where he was fishing.  The next thing I hear is Dave on the radio and he says "I've got someting pretty big on the Sabiki".  The pictures tell the rest of the story.  A 23" Butt, caught on a Sabiki rig!  Dave's "Sabiki Butt" was the only fish caught.  Last week I got a Chinook on a Rattle Trap and this week Dave gets a Halibut on a Sabiki.  What's up with the fishing in the Bay?

Must have been fun having a butt kicking around with the extra 2 hooks looking to land on him!

Who would have thought--way to go--a flattie on a Sabiki. No need to make bait when you can catch them makin' bait!  :smt044

What's next--a Lingcod or Striper on a a Sabiki? I won't bet against it now.

The day began with high expectations. Picture perfect weather and favorable tides. I started by using a flasher w/sardine, after an hour I downsized. No flasher and fresh sardine, after another hour downsized to flasher w/anchovy then with lowered expectations anchovy alone. At slack tide with that anchovy a bat-ray provided some excitement. I was seeing lots of stuff on the fish-finder so I switched poles to make bait. Shortly thereafter a major bendo on the lightweight casting rod. An awesome rush but it never crossed my mind that this dink could be invited to dinner. After the camera photo and measuring three times I announced "shampoo has been applied" 23 1/2 inches length. Going direct sort of cuts out the middle-man. Good eating to be had soon.

I'm curious what other big fish (non bait fish) has been caught on Sabiki so did some searching on the net and found this guy caught Yellow Tail & Baracuda on the Sabiki  :smt007  See link below.  Sorry for the thread jack...

thanks martin and dave for posting hookup...and giving me the call last night.

It was great getting on the water today with you guys.. another gorgeous day at Paradise... water conditions were ideal in the morning.

making bait by the pilings was fun..those macks sure zing when hooked...wow..

sure beats doing home projects....who cares about roof repairs...it doesn't rain in september...

stayed out until 4pm ...battled the wind and current...determined to get that elusive flattie...
somewhere someone posted that it takes 8 attempts to get the halibut..
I can say categorically that is INCORRECT.

still, fun trying...bought the annual pass today to the park in case this quest becomes a protracted battle.

btw..martin thanks for the shiners.
how do I reduce the size of my pics.. ??
I am trying to upload my photos.

You can open the picture using "Paint" program that usually comes with most Windows versions.  After open the picture, click on "Image" the choose "Resize".

Great report! Catching fish on light tackle is always fun! I once saw Monster Guppy catch around A forty pound ray with A sabiki that measured around three feet across, and I caught A salmon on one! Dont underestimate small tackle! WTG.. Thanks ...Andy

Nice surprise butt.

The sabiki is a proven method of catching all kinds of fish.  After all, the traditional shrimp fly rig, is nothing but an upsized sabiki.  In Hawaii, the damashi (sabiki) is a popular "catch everything" reef rig.
