had to get on the water and put in at the beach at Benicia at about 5 pm for a couple of hours of therapy.  Did not catch any on the troll but caught a few on grass shrimp.  one of the best sunsets I have ever seen, that alone would have made it worth while!

Good report and thanks for the pics. Way to get 'em.

People diss those Schoolies which I don't understand--they are way more feisty than Trout that size. And people go on and on about Trout. If you have the right sized tackle those guys out fight any trout (even Eagle Trout strain Rainbows) pound for pound. Their strike is hard and their escape fast. Stripers are my favorite gamefish pound for pound. They lean into it.

that schoolie made about four runs taking drag, but granted on a light outfit!  very spirited indeed, and a taste of what is to come the next month or two!  greatest catch and release fish around.

Current was very swift on the incoming so that is why I pulled up on the island and found a spot where it was a bit protected.  I was throwing a rat l trap around and there was some sort of bait school right where I was at which was a good sign.   I love using very light weight and finding  a spot where I have a good connection to it.  There used to be a ton of salmon fisherman on the rock jetty there now they have been replaced by a dozen or so striper fisherman along the shoreline.  I did not see any of them hook up (oh darn).  Also, seems that it has become fashionable with the youth to cruise to the end of the jetty and around town with hot rods etc. so no shortage of people around.  All in all encouraging to find a few fish there in a relative short amount of time.  I would think it might be a great time for a group hook up to try to head to the fleet and anchor in 10 feet of water or so and see what we can hook into!

Went back out yesterday afternoon.  Legendary wind waves hitting Benicia, so hunkered down on the back side of the little island again.  Brought 6 gobi and a bag of chovies.  Could not go a minute without something tugging on the line, there are LOTS of schoolies in the area.  Nothing of size yesterday, but would be great for a spouse or child to learn on.  Go get em!

by the way, from those shots you can not appreciate the wind  It was blowing straight at downtown Benicia, and rollers at least 3 feet.  I have never seen wind waves like that in Benicia.  The good news I was able to launch from the beach around the corner and easily make my way to the island where I was sheltered from the wind.

Thanks for the info Zin.  I used to fish from the beach there and caught lots of schoolies and occasionally nice keepers.

I used to float tube out to the island and fish behind it out of the current in the old days.  Had days with dozens of 5-10 lb. fish using Rat-L-Traps and Jigs etc.  Also caught a 25 pounder from the beach one day after the spine of a fish popped my float tube!
