Anybody have experience fishing in Costa Rica? We are heading there for Thanksgiving, mainly to surf, but would like to bring home dinner a few times. We are staying in Playa Grande just north of Tamarindo on the Pacific. I am looking to fish from the shore mostly so any tips or advice are appreciated. From what I have read it looks like Snook and possibly rooster fish are targets. If the surf is slow we may look at heading out on a boat. Also I am looking at a travel rod from Cabela's (3 pc). Anybody have any thoughts about these, I am hesitant with a 2 pc rod, 3 seems risky.

Thanks

Brendan

Lotsa big fish!... Its sik... Roosters, snappers, jack crevalle, blue jacks, snook... A 10 foot surf rod with 25 lb, and maybe some big poppers, crocodile spoons, and huge floating megabait or yozuri hydros should do the trick.. Bring a good rod too, and an extra spool of line in case ya get spooled... i went down there 6 years ago and caught HUGE fish from the beach and kayak...
Livin tha pirates life full time! Catchin big cbass in tha kelp all summer long Have fun, live well, conserve the resource, and ask me about my secret fishing spots. but I probably won't tell you, cuz their secret!

I've fished a bunch in the Tamarindo area, mostly from a boat, but a little from the shore.  You're right on the roosters and snook, and always the jacks.

Ralph at http://www.costaricawildfishing.com/ runs kayak fishing and shore fishing trips just north of Tamarindo.

Thanks for the input. If you hear anything else from your local contacts please pass it on. I have heard there isn't much structure in playa grande, but we are planning on taking a boat trip to Ollie's and Witches rock, I assume there would be some fish there.
