Went out today to Tomales, and was met with moderate winds and heavily overcast skies. I had a little trouble making some bait at first and had only one sardine to work with. So I made the best of it and managed a 28"er. Gaffed it brought it aboard and it went balistic in my lap. Had to pin it with my leg before I could get it on the game clip, and perform a little dentistry.  After that I couldn't  land a bait to save my life. Everyone I hooked flipped off before I could get em over the yak. So I through on a lure for a while and towed it around till I manged some more bait. Allen and Andrew were there also, but I don't think they managed any flatties. Looked like they were having fun catching the bait. They were going to take some mackerel home to throw on the Q. I worked through the high tide and ended up getting another good take down. It amazes me how they miss the hooks sometimes.... :smt012 The sun peaked out for a while around 2 and with it came some wind, so I packed it in satisfied with one for dinner. Grilled up a nice chunk for dinner....MMmmmm. No one else was working the area. Talked ot one guy in a big PB that just came in from albicore fishing 50 miles out. He only got 5. That's some expensive fish.... all in all another great day on the water.

Here's my story - the mack bite was slow at first but the 'but bite was even slower. Eventually I found my mack-groove and pulled up 2s and 3s of mini-tuna while my halibut rod, rigged with a live mackerel, just sat there. I had one strong take down while paddling but it didn't stick.

For those of you who have good luck catching halibut, more power to you, but for those who don't (like me), you should target mackerel. I ended the day with about 20 mackerel. I BBQ'd half with the family tonight and did the other half raw sashimi-style (filleted and de-boned) with soy sauce and wasabi.

The mackerel were a blast to catch and were a hit at dinner. A lot of people see them as "just bait," but they kick serious ass on the Q. I might go back on Wednesday...
May the fish be mighty and the seas be meek...

Tomales is my favorite place to hunt halis for sure. Not only is it picturesque, and full of life. It also is very diverse. There are many different types of bottom structure and baits to try.... It's been good to me over the years, and everytime I go out there I learn something new... The place is familiar, but always serves up something different. I usually am having the most fun when I'm learning....
