Are there any stores around nor cal that sell decent sturdy milk crates?   I actually have 2 that I have kept camping/yakking gear in for years but they are rectangular and seem to take up too much space in my boat.  Looking for the square type.

You might try asking the manager at your local grocery store if you can have one. That's what I did and they gave it to me.

They sell them at West Marine, but aren't cheap there. I see them all the time behind our local grocery store, and bet that most managers would give you one.

Actually, if you can get 2. Then cut the bottom off the second one, and since they "stack", it will fit snugly in the top of the first one. Add some hinges (or zip ties like I did) on one side, and a bungee hook on the other, and you have a closeable lid for your crate.
Just a walleye fisherman from MN tryin' ta get salty!

I may be wrong but I think the office supply stores have them or a clone?

No offense, but these are garbage.  Definitely not kayak fishing worthy and probably not even worthy for what they were designed.  They are too flimsy and not square as BillS was wanting.

Most crates can be customized if you have the time & patience. I had a square one I thought was too big, so I cut about 6" out of the middle of it & welded it back together with a craft woodburning/soldering iron to make it narrow (just do the welding outdoors).
It held up great & is still my backup rig.

none taken, I just remember seeing them at the office stores, never really paid any serious attention to them.
would someone enlighten me as to the almost mythical stature of milk crates being used for kayaks?  is it an easy way to haul all your stuff?  I have a Hobie PA and it comes with lots of built in storage, rod holders, etc.  I also have a Hobie Outback and the milk crate might be a better idea for it...........

to me it just seems a great container for a few things so they wont bounce around in the back.. plus it drains and its a nice rigid structure to attach a couple rocket launchers to for storing net, gaff or etc.

Something else Im working on is I have a collapsable soft cooler with a rigid back (one of those with wheels and a pull out handle kind of like a carry  on bag).   It fits perfectly in the back and it would be perfect for either fish storage.. food, clothes etc storage for maybe use in fresh water.   The back of it is a perfect structure to strap a couple rocket launchers on to as well.  Even has a few pockets.

Like this but a diff brand:  http://www.amazon.com/Travelers-Club-Collapsible-Rolling-Supplies/dp/B001KHQXYE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=sporting-goods&qid=1250903480&sr=8-1

Not sure how that would hold up in the salt though.

Back in the day, they were very convenient, however things have evolved.  For many, especially on this site, the Plano Marine box has replaced the milk crate.  Check out the link to see one rigged.

They are good for storage. The issue I have with them is they allow you to take more and more crap along. I found by using a plano box you take what you need and nothing more. Makes for a simpler day on the water and loading/unloading your boat.

just my 2 cents :smt002
