hey guys, I usually use the handline method when I go to FR off my yak.  It gives me a better feeling of the bite and instant hooksetting reaction.. but can be messy, unless you use a heavier line.  Below is my weapon of choice when I handline, with 80lb test line connected to a torpedo rig.  For protection from "line heating" I use the innertube of a racing bicycle that I insert my fingers in.

I have seen a bunch of vietnamese and Italian fisherman in Monterey using handlines...as in just holding the line in their hands.  No idea what happens when a big fish hits.

Hi Yakers:

I tried hand lining a Sabiki rig but, ended up with a rats nest! :smt044
When I was young, I would bend straight pins into hooks and, use my Moms' thread to hand line bait.
I made a Doz. Old Style Oak  Hand Liners out of Galley Railing and gave them away to a bunch of Kids. The Oak Handliners make great Stocking stuffers. :smt002

pernicious, that's a beautiful spool, I bet it works great.

I'm hoping to not use gloves, using a design that allows one to spool the line with one hand, (like the one shown in the article).  Whether that's realistic or not, we shall see!  But I bet even gophers would be a blast.

I'm planning on using 50lb mono, with a 20lb leader so I can break it off if need be...  fishing shallow water only.

When I was a kid, fishing with an old Italian fisherman, he demonstrated hand lining salmon.   The scene is that he was trolling for Salmon, caught the Salmon and was trying to pull the line and fish the last few yards into the boat.

The method was :   His arm was curved up and over his head. His arm was acting as a fishing rod, absorbing the pulses of the Salmon.   The line RAN OVER THE TOP OF HIS FINGERS, FROM HIS LITTLE FINGER TO HIS FOREFINGER. His THUMB HELD THE LINE TO THE TOPS OF THE FINGERS.   If the Salmon took off and the line cut the fingers, it would cut the skin on top of the fingers, down to the bone.  This avoided cutting the meat and tendons under the fingers.  Before cutting the skin, hopefully you would release the line with your thumb to play out line. I imagine that a glove would help protect you hand.

On some occasions, he would draw the line in, passing it from hand to hand, each time picking up the line over the top of his hand.

Most of the time, it appeared that this method was used in a quick motion, to flip the fish into the boat. Not so much as a method for playing a charging 30 lbs Striper.

The picture below shows what I'm talking about.  I used my Ipod cord so you could see the line a little better.

thanks, I've had that spool since i was in diego garcia.. biggest fish i caught on it was a 5' mako, it took forever to get it on the boat but it was fun fighting it.  I'll be at FR this sunday using that spool.  When I'd get snagged, I would let out some slack, tie it to my yak and anchor until something gives.. of course with the knife ready should a big swell come.
