Mrs. Finaegelin has "requested" a luxury hotel weekend over Labor Day after our week-long backpack trip in the High Sierra. Something like Little River Inn near Mendocino, I think. The question is, should we do that area? Or go farther north into Abking country? I hear there is a salmon season up there... might a novice yak fisherman get lucky? Anyway, advice would be appreciated. Tight lines.

Fishing closes in that area on the 16th.
Hotels are nice but what's the point if ya can't fish???

TimberCove Lodge was recently sold and I believe renovated. Fantastic ocean views, big fireplace rooms some with both hot tub and huge shower with floor to ceiling window in the shower, and a large piano/bar lounge area with restaurant. You could cart or drive your yak to the launch which is adjacent to the property, 1min in car about 5min carted, and fish north to Stillwater or south to Ft.Ross. They also just recently removed/filled in the japanese pond area and they have been having live outdoor music on the weekend evenings on the inside point there with a great view of the cove. I have not stayed there since the sale/possible remodel. But am considering doing so for upcoming anniversary. jim

Looks like you do need to come up to Abking country, finaegelin.  Our rockfish/ling season is open until 9/15 (Northern Mgt. Area), and that 10 day salmon season on the ocean is 8/29 - 9/7.

"might a novice yak fisherman get lucky?..."

Oh yeah, Baby!  If the fish cooperate we'll have plenty of opportunities.

For a nice luxury hotel or B&B experience do some research on Trinidad.  There's great stuff nearby for exploring ocean, redwoods, lagoons, beaches...etc.  It's a long trip but well worth it, and the chance to get in on the only ocean salmon opportunity in California is something to consider for sure.

Keep in touch.
