STINSON BEACH (CBS 5) ―

Stinson Beach was closed Tuesday to swimmers, waders, and surfers following a pair of shark sightings, authorities said.

Golden Gate National Recreation officials told CBS 5 that they received two "reliable" shark sighting reports on Monday.

As a result, officials said they made the determination to close the beach for 5 days. The beach was to remain closed until Saturday, although the length of the closure could be extended if additional sightings occured.

Officials did not immediately know what kind of shark was spotted, but noted that Great White Sharks are very common in the area and there have been several attacks over the years.

The Stinson beach closure is the first in Northern California following a string of warnings in recent days to beachgoers in Oregon after a string of unusual shark sightings - and the capture of a 12-foot creature - along the Oregon coastline.

Holy crap!  I didn't post a report, but I launched there on Saturday (down by Seadrift) during a family beach trip and paddled around for about an hour casting a wormtail.  Was wondering if I had company - I did hear a single sea lion barking in the vicinity...

I'm more interested in the story that's referenced in that article: a 12ft GW was "accidentally" caught + killed off the OR coast after it got tangled in a crabpot rope? That's the first I've heard of that story--does anybody have more info?
Thanks,
PK

Sin I was thinking the same thing! What happens to the fisherman? Since it was his pot, that killed A protected creature!

Was that a baby dolphin?????? They kind of screwed that shark up for research by dragging it like that.

I just spent some time reading the info available online (and unfortunately the comments section of those articles and youtube vid...an exercise in frustration). It's an interesting and unique situation, that's for sure. But it does seem kind of suspicious; a 12 GW can get tangled in the rope from a recreational crabpot and drown? Really? Not calling them liars. But I am certain they broke the law and deserve a citation. Man, I'm a real jerk today.

I think that there are a lot of pelagic fish that would drown with out a constant flow of water over the gills.

Dang! I wish I knew it was OK to bring home endangered species if you find them dead...about a month ago...when I found a HUGE turtle dead, floating on the surface in some kelp. Guess I coulda brought it home and made soup.
Oh, or that canary rockfish that I saw floating on the surface...should brought that one home too, since it was already dead.  :smt002
