i am looking for a fish a fish finder and VHF radio for my kayak.

On the VHF - looking for a reliable, submersible model.

Fish finder -  I have an Ocean Kayak Prowler 15 and fish ocean, lakes and rivers.   Looking for input on shoot through, not shoot through and portable.    Portable seems attractive for traveling and also to put on my 2 person 'family' kayak or also to put on a canoe.   If portables are known to b e problematic, i could just install a fish finder on my main ride - the P15.   Any recommendations on make/model and where to get them?   Since i fly fish, it seems like something that looks sidewase would be nice, but not essential.  Do i need dual/triple beam or single beam is adequate?  Submersabiity seems like a big plus, as flipping over in the ocean is a definite possibility.

For both the VHF and fish finder, i am not looking to spend top dollar - just looking for something good enough to address basic needs.

All comments or recommendations appreciated , especially if there are needs or considerations i have overlooked.

I just bought a Uniden MHS550.

There is a good deal on Ebay for them.

The MHS350 got good reviews from Kayakers on Amazon. The 550 looks like a newer more compact version and looks like it has better waterproofing.

I haven't used it yet so I will post feedback when I have it in hand and have dunked it a few times.

For fishfinders most of my experience is in boating using them. I used to go with Lowrance sounders...all the way back to papergraphs. Lately I have been using the Humminbird 700 series.

I (and others) use eagle. Which I think is lowrance. Others use hummingbird but I think mostly if you have a T13 or 15 since they have the scupper hole designed for it. And most use the FF/GPS combo. I may be talking out of my a$$ so others feel free to correct me. RE" your portable question I think just a few go that route. Most prefer the 'perm' models. for VHF I had a cobra and it died within a few months. I now have a standard horiz. Works like a charm.

I've had the icom m-72 for 3 years with no problems. It has very good send power great reception an is rated ipx-8 for water resistance. Recently upgraded by adding a remote mike.

Lowrance and Humminbird have been good to me, still use my original matrix 17 and added a 383 to the stable. I was able to share my waypoints between the two with the "pc connect" option, as well as save them to my computer. The last software upgrade allows you to view your waypoints on google earth.

My Matrix 17 crashed on me after around 3 years of use. There was a $70 flat rate fee and it came back with all its waypoints intact. Thats when I invested in the pc connect feature, just in case.

My maintenance is a wipe down w/dish soap and warm water, and lube w/dielectric grease. The only failures have been the trailer connectors, wires, and of course dead batteries.

Thanks for the feedback.   I need to get these 2 essential pieces of gear soon.
