Here is a link to some Powersonic brand chargers.  I use the 12500 on  4aH sla batteries( there might be a cheaper version if you look around).  You might be able to throw something together that will work, but I get a funny feeling leaving projects like that plugged in and unattended at the house!  This charger was designed for smaller size batteries and lower charging current.  Mine has been faithful for 3 years and counting.

I have had great luck with a charger ment to maintain motorcycle batteries.
It charges at 1.25 amps and has kept the batteries working for 5 years now

I use a similar set up with an ACI Advanced Chargers motorcycle battery maintenance charger and two wire connectors I picked up at Radio Shack.  I installed the same type of two wire connectors on my FF/GPS power lead and installed the battery in a small waterproof box and added a waterproof switch to the box.

I use my charger from my dirtbike, Battery Tender Junior, 12V 750mA output.  You can get these at Cycle Gear or other motor sports companies.  I think I paid $29 on sale.

Jameco in Belmont is the electronics store where I got my battery - couple bucks cheaper than Power Sonic.  They have a wide selection of amperage capacities, depending upon how much weight you want to carry.  650-592-8097, 1355 Shoreway Road, Belmont (just off Ralston, east of 101).

I use the one that I use to charge my PB batteries. I don't leave it over night and I do it in the garage. I check is after  a few hrs with a volt meter. Seems to work fine. I think I got it at harbor freight for like $10.

Cabelas has a small simple charger that stops charging once the batteries full. I've used mine for a couple years with out any problems. It's not any bigger than a converter you'd use for any other AC/12volt application.
