Stayed & fished Albion on Monday with a few others...ocean conditions were much improved and the bite picked way up.

I started working the kelp pockets inside the cove on the south side where it almost inaccessible the previous days due to the wash. Had a couple good hits & missed it at first but dropped back down in the same pocket for another try - the fish wasn't ready to give up on an easy lunch, either. Hauled it up to see a big ol' cabby - my first legal cab, probably to remain my PB for a long time. Ended up measuring out at 24 inches & weighed 9 - 10 lbs. Caught on one of my homemade rubbery jigs - one of these in green:

I worked my way out to the kelp in front of the rock at the north end of the cove & pulled up various rockies, including small olives, Chinas & a nice verm. The bite was slow but consistent. Most fish were caught on my other homemade jig tipped with squid. I tied it on hoping for a ling; ironically the only ling I got was about 18" & bit a shrimp fly/hoochie.

Here's the other homemade & my new favorite jig - all beat up after use. This might be dubbed the "butt-bead" jig thanks to Fish Master - "What are those, butt beads?!?!" That should keep anyone from stealing it. BTW, I can make you one for a few bucks to cover parts & labor - for fishing use only...  :dontknow:

On the way in, I tried the kelp patches more toward the middle, just inside the cove and got hit twice - both times the squid was slurped off the hook so I went around once more & 3rd time's a charm - another cabby. This one came in at 19." Paddled in with a heavy stringer and worn out but glad to find some nice fish at Albion.

Nice haul - that's a trophy cab, especially from a boat.   :smt001

D'oh! Now it'll definitely be the biggest cab this year.

Good to see there ARE fish in Albion. I look forward to hitting that place up in the not so distant future.

Thanks, guys. BTW, what's the best way to cook cabbies...?

Not solo, but was the last one back in after Don D. Sledge got OTW early, then a small crew went out a little later: Ed & Al (Utah guys), Bigfoot & Tommy, Don D, myself. Everyone did OK Mon. Don caught the 32" ling that Sledge mentioned.

Crap, didn't even realize I still had your sharpener - stuck it in my pfd pocket & forgot all about it. That thing is vintage, I gotta get it back to you. As far as that hook, it broke in 2 places after I got slammed & then unbuttoned at the end of Sunday - cheap hooks...

Passed through Mendo/Albion on my way home from work last night and the water looked great. Thought I saw DonD's ride still down there at the camp.
