If you don't believe me, ask Rodney Orr, one of two known men on earth to have survived TWO GWS attacks on the Nor Cal coast.

I did a job years ago with Rodney before he retired. He's something else to talk with. Great storyteller. The scars don't lie.
If you want to thank a Vet, be a person worth fighting for.

You know I'm born to lose and gambling's for fools

But that's the way I like it baby

I don't want to live forever.                 :headbang:

Seriously though, the morning before you're going to paddle out just don't slather on the b.o. stick.
Sharks hate stinky pits.
Always has worked for me.....knock on wood. I saw a huuge fin at Doran a couple winters ago. I told the guy next to me in the lineup and he replied " Bro, they're out here everyday. If you wanna paddle in.....more waves for me." l stayed out OTW as there was alot of pieces of meat for the landlord to choose from that day. No one got hit and the surf was good. Don't worry, Be happy. jim

P.S. And Don't Watch Shark Week on the boob-tube.

I grew up diving at Greyhound Rock, New Years Island and Halfmoon Bay because as a kid with little money, I had to stay close to home. I mean, back then Woolco gas cost 25 cents a gallon !
My brother and I dove these spots dozens of time, speared many rockfish [ especially big grass rocks] lings and cabezon and never had a shark experience at all.

I think that since then, the ever increasing biomass of pinnipeds in the water [ thanks Marine Mammal Protection Act] and of course the ever increasing biomass of hominids in the water are ever so steadiliy ratcheting up the threat matrix.

I grew up unafraid of the possibiliy of my own shark story in the Bay Area...and yet as I grow older and wiser, I am starting to consider them as a greater issue.

I am rational to fault and yet I thank the odds are slowly shifting.
If he ever read this post, I am sure that the diving communities best spokesman, Randy Fry [ RIP] would argue against me.

When a GWS took him and I suddenly felt a lot less invincible.

The odd of getting attack by a GWS is much much less than getting hit by a car!

maybe....but just remember that kayak fishing, spear fishing, abalone diving, scuba diving, surfing, wind surfing, kayak surfing, kite surfing, stand-up-paddle is an ever growing activity, which simply means more of us to chew on...and ever think of how many GWS sightings that are simply NOT reported. Also, just because you don't see 'em doesn't mean their not there. Chances are, most of us have been "checked out" by the land lord at one point. Just remember that the GWS has been protected for years now and WE WILL SEE MORE OF 'EM. The "stats" will surely change.

Just my 2 cents...

Then again, it has long been a tradition to spearfish and carry the freshly wounded/killed fish on your belt stringer. Belt stringer? As is in around the waist.
I have done this my whole life and suddenly it looks ill advised.
Its a well devised "blood-trail" making device. The difference is instead of dangling you legs from the surface, you're waving them below it.
