Looks like fire may cause problems this weekend.
Any suggestions for alt. site to launch or would it be best to reschedule?
Any immediate response would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Eric

eric,
i was thinking about this last night while i was sleeping.

alternate sites i think would be crapitola (parking = problem)
new brighton (rangers = potential problem)
or S.C. wharf which is nice and protected but the fishing is kind of bleh.

nb would be my choice due to the ample amounts of parking to support people.  same thing as at hogan though, i dont think an unsanctioned "tournament" would be looked upon nicely.  a bit of a surf launch compared to capitola but it may be doable.  Not sure about the conditions without actually going out there though. they are saying there are still stripers in the area and someone could paddle up to fish the cap kelp beds or down to seacliff to fish the boat.  always halis around too.

nb fee is $8

and you're right, 8am is open..sucks.

not sure what else there is, maybe some of the sc locals could chime in?

capitola? If the surf is up you can launch from the pier. I think you have to make a choice....Parking or better fishing

Good parking but less fish and $'s.  You have NB (late gate open and parking fees) and the SC harbor (parking fees and not the best fishing, unless you count bait).

Better fishing but parking issues. You got Capitol or maybe the cement ship (south of Capitola and NB). Need to confirm that you can beach launch there.

Prolly can't get 40 boats to launch out of seacliff by the c.ship.  The lguards would come down like a tenderloin bum on a half smoked stogie.  Lots a families and kids swimming in the surfzone.

What about bean?

Anywhere in the area is likely to be smoke filled if the fire is still raging. And if we're on the coast anywhere north of Santa Cruz there is going to be a ton of fire equipment traffic.

I'll happily fish anywhere if it is moved, but my vote would be to reschedule. If you can wait until this evening after 6:00 pm, there should be another detailed fire situation report that will give a better idea of how this fire is going to go.

Actually, SC harbor is a really good choice!  Plenty of parking, think its around 5$, space for a BBQ lunch (afaik) and plenty of fishable grounds out there!

I agree with the Harbor as best bet.  Capitola is way to congested.  New Brighton fees and hassle launching (if you go solo, you can f=drive down and drop your stuff, but all of us, don't think so)  Bean Hollow might have big surf and we'd have to get past the fire traffic from Bonny Doon road up to Waddell.

SC Wharf..again, parking, launching is limited, and anyone can paddle up to Stemers from the harbor anyway.

I will make the final decision after I get a fire report tonight
It sounds like the best back up site would be S.C. harbor.
Any objections please let me know.

New brighton and seacliff are currently closed because of a shark sighting. In addition, the lifegaurds at NB are enforcing a no boat/kayak rule within 1000ft of shore.  :smt013 Also, last weekend the surf at NB was HUGE.

I vote for a reschedule for all of the above reasons....Davenport evacuated, who knows if HWY 1 will be closed, Capitola has access issues.  Has anyone checked with State Parks?....for an organized event as this they may want a permit, permit fee, proof of liability insurance, signed liability wavers, more advanced notice, in addition to the parking fees.  (I used to work for a Park Department.)  I don't really know what State Parks policy is.
Not that it matters that I show up or not, but I won't be there this weekend.  Sean (Picean), my fishing buddy and brother-in-law, and the guy I was going to stay with, has been evacuated from his house in Bonny Doon.  I'm there to support Sean if needed, but fishing is out for me.
