Hi,

I have done a fair amount of kyak fishing in the Atlantic Ocean. Compared to the Pacific Ocean and the Bay, the Atlantic Ocean is like a glassy pond.  Anyway, I just bought a used Revo and want to put together 2 check lists- one for the Bay and for the Ocean.
What do you guys bring and wear when fishing the Bay?
What do you bring and weart for fishing the Ocean?

Thanks,
Peter

Also, Dry Suit versus Wet Suit.  Dry suits look alot more comfy and manueverable????

wetsuit = $200 or less, drysuit = $800 ( i think). Those drysuits are super duper nice. depends on your budget....

I'd say the bay is the same as the ocean from a safety point of view. It may actually be more dangerous because of currents, tides, and boat traffic. I really can't think of anything that I use in one and not the other. Maybe no anchor in the bay.

For the Bay, I think some of the best "gear" is knowledge...  Before you go out know what tides you'll be dealing with and plan accordingly...   check the weather...  be aware of the shipping lanes, ferries, snaggy areas to avoid, etc etc.

There are quite a few hazards in the bay.

You can find good dry suits on craigslist and ebay for around $300, and I find them to be much more comfy. After a nasty shore break at San Gregorio a couple weeks ago, I wished I had my drysuit on instead of my waders.  :smt001

The only rough part is the neck gasket. They're hard to get on and off, and can chafe after wearing it all day. I still think it's a lot better than a wetsuit.

I've always worn a westuit, but have noticed several kayakers wearing waders - which I would think are more comfortable than a wetsuit, but not the same safety benefit as a drysuit.    Having gone for a "swim" while flyfishing in Montana in my waders, as long as I'm wearing a belt and don't have to go a long ways - this would be a good solution.   Any comments out there from folks who have tried both?

Not to sound like a d!*#head but I could not disagree more.
I use an anchor (quick release) in the bay a LOT (sturgeon) and rarely in the ocean.
I think because of the current the bay is more dangerous than the ocean. I say this because if you fall off in the ocean there is a relative certainty you will get back on. * Note relative.
Anchored in the bay if you fall off and do not have a firm grip on the kayak forget about it. Better have your VHF attached to your PFD 'cuz you need to hail someone for help.
As far as apparal; the choice is yours. There is a lot of good onfo here on the board  but ultimately it boils down to personal choice.
