Hi Everyone,
newbie here...........I want to get a Hobie pedal yak. due to two torn rotater cuffs a paddle yak is out of the question.  I have tried a Hobie Outback and Hobie Sport at Silver Lake on highway 88 a week ago.  my son and I switched the yaks back and forth and I did not like the sport model, it seemed too cramped and harder to pedal than the outback.  the outback seemed more stable to me.  there was a 10 mph wind with maybe a 1' chop.  the outback handled the wind and chop with no problems other than an occasional spray over the bow.  per the GPS we pedaled 9 miles that day and except for a bad sunburn we were not all that tired even at the 7200' elevation.  I am going to try the Hobie pro angler soon, my only concern with the PA will be the weight especially if I am by myself.
I will be transporting the yaks on a 1/4 ton Bantam "Jeep" trailer so no problem with lifting the yaks to the roof of a vehicle.  my only concern about the jeep trailer is that the bed is only 6' long so I might have a bunch of yak hanging out the back end of it.  I was planning on using the Thule "Hull a port" for each yak.
I am 6'3" and 205 lbs.  I have fished for years mostly in the high sierra lakes along highway 88 (Silver, Red, Caples, Upper and Lower Blue, etc.)  and foothill lakes.  I would be using the Hobie at the high elevation lakes that don't allow gas motors.  I presently fish out of a 15' Gregor aluminum boat.
any advice anyone?  does anyone here have a Pro Angler?  will any of the shops offer a discount for NCKA members?  all of the hobies are expensive but seem to hold their value.

if you do a search there's a couple of threads on that boat (or aircraft carrier depending on your view of it)...

I did read a couple of threads about the PA but no one seems to own one?  maybe because most of the people here are more salt oriented?

only one place within an hour's drive had a PA in stock, so I went to Livermore Friday and picked it up.  the kid that loaded it on my Jeep trailer insisted on strapping it down upside down and only a few inches from my 09 Tacoma's tailgate.  first driveway I went through it dented my tailgate and scraped the paint on my Snugtop lid.  I should have listened to my instincts and tied it down right side up!
it is the Moss color, would have prefered the yellow for more visibility.
took it to Upper Blue Lakes off of highway 88 yesterday, beautiful day!  got smokey from the fire around noon and started clouding up and sprinkles were starting so we headed in at a fast clip.  the water was choppy and with the clouds I did not see the boulder until we were right on top of it.  bent both masts and tore one fin on the drive.  I think I can straighten the masts and have a pair of fins ordered.   :smt013
the PA is super stable!  my son was in a Hobie Sport and in a race I could just start to pull away from him.
the only thing I don't like about the PA is the weight!  on the water you don't notice the weight and with the turbo fins it pedals easily.  the seat is super comfortable!  lots of storage room for gear and the "ice chest" in the bow is the cat's meow!  I am 6'3" and 205 lbs., plenty of room to stretch out, had the pedals set at #7.

How does it paddle?
Group IQ is inversely proportional to the size of the group.

A Steelhead always knows where he is going, but a Man seldom does.

not bad, I did not use the "T" handle it comes with to make a canoe paddle, instead I paddled it like a kayak.  I did not paddle for very far and would not want to do so as I have two torn rotator cuffs.  I was amazed at how stable the PA is, you would have to just about fall out of the boat before you could tip it from the seat.
Troller:  Santa Rosa is a two hour drive each way for me, more than I wanted to do.
