I figured this post belongs here or in Geared Up, 50/50 chance, so if it doesn't belong here feel free to move it mods.

Long time kayaker, long time fisher, short time kayak fisher.  With the kayak I've been introduced to the inshore fishing like around Monterey Bay.  The joining of these two hobies has also created an entirely new wish list.  I've spent a few hundred already on storage lids, rod holders, a new seat, and a ff.  Used the search feature ALOT!!  Thanks for all the great info guys!!

I've been using a Shimano Curado with a bass rod because it's what I have.  I want to buy new reel that will service as many types of fish and conditions as possible.  I've narrowed it down to a Calcutta 200 or 400.  That should cover rockfish et al, large bass lures, stripers, steelhead, blah blah.

I don't want to pay for the TE so I'm looking at the B-series.  I want a level wind and want to be able to cast. If at all, which are you guys using or which would you suggest based on line capacity?  My only reason to size down to the 200 is the left hand reel option (201b).  They don't make a 401b.  I'd have to spend appx. $140 more dollars for the TE...that's a rod!

Based on your experience and thoughts...the 200b or the 400b specific to capacity?

P.S. I'm not left handed, I've just reeled left for 20 years.

Before you get set on the Shimano Calcutta at least take a look at the Daiwa Luna.
http://www.tackletour.com/reviewdaiwaluna.html

This Luna has proven to be a better choice than the Calcutta B at the same Price. It comes real close in performance to the 400TE.

Fisherman's Warehouse Price:

Shimano Calcutta 400B = $249.99
Daiwa Luna 300           = $239.99

Just my 2 cents

check out the new abu garcia revo toro.
i was debating between calcutta400te & toro60hs and decided to get a toro.  it's an awesome reel.  the line capacity of toro60 is almost as same as calcutta400's, the price is in the same price range as the calcutta b-series, it has more drag pressure, it's a low profile baitcasting reel (designed for casting), it comes in left-hand, etc.  it also comes in a smaller size version, toro50, if toro60 is too big.

I'd say, if you can only get one to do as much as possible, get the 200.
I have both, love both, will use both tomorrow at Albion.
My 400 is w/o levelwind, I like the simplicity. The 200, with braid, can do pretty much what it's big brother can, on a smaller scale. I've yet to be spooled on either reel, even with mono.
The 400 is just too big for some applications, like bass, steelies, light rocky fishing.
My 2 cents. Good luck in your choice.
If you don't know where you're headed, any road could get you there.

Well, pulled the trigger today.  Came home with a Diawa Luna and 340yds of 30# braided!  Thanks Eric!  The selling point was that it was everything the Shimano had to offer plus it was lefty...at a slightly cheaper price.

Now onto a good general use rod for it... :smt011

Thanks again for the help guys!!

I match my daiwa luna with a calstar 700 XLH. I replaced the handle with an after-market handle from Japan. Probably not worth the money but it works great and looks cool. The daiwa luna is second only to the calcutta TE at much less cost.

Well, it looks like if some gets stuck in a ditch you probably pull em out with that bad boy!  Looks cool.  I'll check out the Calstar.  Thanks!
