Launched at around 700.  A bit rough for me.  There were a couple of other guys that launched just as I got there.  Went out about a quarter mile but it was still rougher than I wanted to see.  One of those days when you need to keep moving into the waves.  Headed back in and made it without incident.  The other two guys looked like they were staging for a return also.  Better luck next time.  On a positive note, it was nice and cool at the beach and i didn't lose any gear today.

Definitely an intense day at Bean.I'm pretty sure the two other kayak fishermen you saw were PISCEAN and me.The launch was a bumpy ride, but we both got out clean. The steep swell and wind waves kept us looking over our shoulders constantly. We worked the reefs out to about 85ft.The water was cold and dense fog hung just onshore for most of the day.My total was one 18" cab (released) ,two china rockfish (released) and a hail Mary 32" ling on the 6" scampi. Thanks again for a great session PISCEAN. :smt003

Very nice work guys.  The picture does not really give justice to the conditions.

This session was very technical and I don't recommend fishing Bean in these conditions unless you are an advanced to expert paddler.

Otherwise, you could get plowed over by 6-8ft swells topped with wind waves that jack up and break over shallow reef/pinnacles.If you were separated from your boat you would have to swim against a strong current in fifty degree water and then dragged across a rock reef in the surf zone and slammed by dumping waves on a steep beach that tries to suck you back out as the tide ebbs.
Sound like fun?  :smt003

Someone else launched into that mess yesterday??? :smt044 :smt044 :smt044

Although I seriously doubted our sanity after about an hour on the water, the persevearance paid off with a nice adrenaline rushes and a few decent fish too!
I echo Aaron's concern about the conditions, it was pretty ugly but sometimes you gotta pay to play. It turned out to be a good excercise in open water paddling. As we were about to call it we decided to make one more deep drift alongside the Queen of Hearts in about 80FOW (it was a bit more relaxing fishing deep, since the sneaker waves were dampened by the depth) and we both got our daily lingcod fix. Aaron's was the nicest, 32" and just a hair shy of 10lbs. Mine was a dink compared to his fish, but all I wanted was a fresh fish dinner, and my 25" 5.6lb fish was perfect.
Baked ling with steamed summer squash & red onion, with a baked potato. Fantastic. WAF in da bank!

Thanks again for a great session PISCEAN
YOU picked the launch I'll have you remember. I wanted to fish the harbor! :smt044 :smt044
I'm still pretty amped. It was a great trip Aaron, and it was nice to know (while I was being slapped around by windwaves and hearing the Hawaii Five-O theme over and over in my head) that I was paddling with the guy who had just taught a rescue class the previous week!

Danman, sorry we missed you out there. We had our radios on ch 69, next time give us a holler.

I did get a radio call around 11am, TallPaul had ridden up to check it out. I guess he didn't feel like tying a kayak to his motorcycle though.

FisHunter, I got a waypoint for "The Spot" :smt003. At least I think it's "The Spot". It's at least "A Spot" for next time!

This was trip #11 for me this season, onward to 20!
