Planning to fish Paradise on Thursday AM, maybe Friday too!  Tides look good.  Anybody interested?

Brand new at this, but I'm going to give it a shot tomorrow. Got any suggestions for times/tides to fish at Paradise? How about launching? And lastly, what would you try using first?

Crocketteer - here's a link for SF Bay tides, add about 30 minutes for tides at Pt. Chauncey/Paradise.

http://wolfweb.unr.edu/homepage/edc/tides/2009/sfgg_fr09.html

Better halibut tides are those with lower differences between hi and lo, water doesn't get as muddied-up compared to big tidal differences.  The tides tue-wed look nice (tue hi at about 0745; wed hi about 0930 at Paradise). Could fish incoming and outgoing - watch the afternoon winds.  Though I don't think Paradise Park opens until 0700, maybe could launch at Paradise Cay (Google these if not familiar).  Launch at Paradise Park requires a cart, or friend, to get kayak from parking lot downhill to launch.

Best baits are live shiners and smelt, can use other live as well.  There is a recent post started by Relentless on rigs and methods (I think it is listed under General Fishing Tips forum, if not, use the search function to search for halibut).  That thread has everything you need on rigs and how to fish them.  If you don't have live bait could use frozen anchovies, swimbaits (e.g., Storm 4", 5", 6" anchovies), hair-raisers/jigs.

You mentioned that you were brand new to this, don't know if you mean kayaking or halibut fishing. Safety is paramount, if you are new to kayaking then I'd strongly recommend that you have your safety gear, safety plans, and familiarity with how your boat handles in various conditions together before kayaking in the salt.  You can find detailed discussions on safety issues on this website.  Basic safety gear and plans include PFD, appropriate clothing for possible immersion, VHF radio, GPS, whistle, ability to self rescue if you roll - should always fish with a buddy. Best to take a class or learn from experienced folks before going alone. Take your time. Hope this helps - good luck.

Bird,
Thanks for your tips for all at Paradise. I have all the gear with me you mentioned, but no buddy to fish with. I, hopefully, will have others trying for fish near me today. I'll post results later. Wish me luck.

I may be out there with Hobie Dave on Thursday too.  If we are, we will launch around 7:30 and will be monitoring channel 69.

Jesus, doesn't anybody work anymore?  :smt003

I'm gonna try and get Thursday off, too! If so, I'll be launching from Paradise Park around 8:00AM. Don't think they open the gate until 8:00 on weekdays.

**Ooops, sorry, the gates DO open at 7:00AM.

Dustin - is it possible to park outside the gate and cart to the water if we wanted to get an earlier launch?  pay afterwards.

Don't think so. There isn't really anywhere to park your car near there.

I'll try to give them a call to verify when they open.

Edit: Just called the park and the gates open at 7:00AM. Also, if anyone plans on going to LL to get bait Keith sometimes lags getting to the shop on weekdays and isn't there until after 7:00 anyway.

I'll call Keith Wednesday afternoon to check shiner availability and see what time he's gonna open on Thursday.
