Figured I'd leave a report:

Met up with Lucky 13 (ernest), TY the fishman (TY), and Sandman (Martin), this morning around 7:00 am. We worked the entire area drifting everything live you could think of, anchovies, shiners, herring, and smelt. Not one Hali to show for all of the work. I believe Sandman reported a take down or two but unbuttoned, and nadda for Ernest and I. We could see lots of bait fish on the FF and topwater action atop the deep wholes. None of the fishing boats had anything to boast as well.

It was nice meeting the two of you, Ty and Sandman, thanks for coming out and joining Ernest and I. Also thanks Sandman, for the future advice on going into the blue with a Hobie. I didnt know that GWS were attracted to the fins of the peddle drive system, and that fellow Kayakers do not recommend using them on the open ocean. I will keep it in mind when I finally venture that way. Its too bad though, I would of thought that it might be nice to peddle out into the open blue as opposed to paddle, but Im up for either.

We will have to do ARW one more time Ernest, come on, we cant give up yet. I think the 13th time out will be the one for us, lol!

Ty, we didnt get a chance to hear from you before you left. How did you do today? Did you end up with any action where you were fishing?

All in all, it was a beautiful day out, hot and calm, making perfect conditions. Would have been nice to have caught a hali, but shoot, like they say, its nice just getting out on the water.

Cheers,

Geoff

Hi Guys,

Trolled live smelt and shiners from the flag pole on up to the second break.  First take down didn't stick but I think I didn't let the hali inhale the smelt.  On the second take down I let out some line, held my breath and set the hook...fish on, head shakes ripping line and then off.  When I reeled up the line, one of the points on the treble hook was gone...oh well.

A few but not that many power boats or shore fishermen.  Didn't see any nets out so all in all a great day weather wise but no love for any of us anglers.

Good to meet new yakkers...Ernest suffers from one of my major weaknesses...sea sickness.  Scopolamine patches work for me.  Geoff wasn't aware that Dan's Hobie had his fins deployed when the landlord came knocking on his door.  Both of them would love to get out for rock fish...I told them that it would spoil them, LOL.

Chris came by to say hello...

Tight lines,

Gary

I thought we were doing all the right things and had good lively baits. My only conclusion is, the bay had no fish :smt044
I don't know man, 0-7 is really discouraging. I should really try something more productive. But I kinda like fishing with live bait. My herrings were looking so good today, even I want to eat them  :smt003
I think I'll try something else next time, possibly fresh water.

It was nice meeting you Ty and Gary. I never found out how Ty did. I heard him on the radio, but couldn't figure out what he was saying. Also, a yellow kayak showed up for maybe 30 minutes and then left. Maybe he caught his limit already :smt002

There're plenty of bait fish out there maybe that's why they're not hungry.   I'm sure they're down there just keep on trying and you'll catch them.  Thank you for the report Ernest.

Ernest,

Hali fishing is usually not that productive and 0 for 7 isn't unheard of.

I didn't take a look at your bait or Geoff's bait but we usually catch smelt or shiner perch in our nets from local waters not herring our anchovies.  Then again everyone has their favorite sites so maybe you guys found sites with schools of herring and/or anchovies.

Ty and I came in at the same time and he didn't have any ARW love either.

The guy in the yellow yak was long time NCKA member, Chris (kingfisher).  He was following his fish sense and it wasn't registering anything at ARW.

Hi guys,
Nice to meet you all. I skipped the Delta and decided to met up with new yakers Lucky 13 (ernest), Alameda (Geoff), and an old Bean Hollow friend Sandman.  I do not get any bite/fish but enjoy good weather/paddling.  I am sure, next week will be better . Low tide and birght moon may not a good idea. Thank you Gary sandman for live bait.

Hope to see all of you again.
Ty

you guys were fishing on a 6 ft tide, so dont feel too bad about not getting em, and good job giving it a try. Lucky, keep at it and itll happen soon.
Ive seen a bunch of herring in my throw net of late. I dont keep them, not because the arent excellent bait, but i cant seem to keep them alive.

OH MY GOD!

Gary, since when did you become an expert on Hobie's?  Wow.  Dude, Geoff, honestly, get some more opinions and do some research via search engines on the internet.  I've fished numerous times from Hobie's in the ocean without ever seeing a shark.  The day the red hobie adventure got munched on at Bean Hollow, myself and other ncka members Chucke and Frankfishing stayed out fishing for 3 hours.  Chuck was on an identical Hobie and did everything he could to catch fish.  The shark never made a reappearance.  We were right there on the spot where the shark attacked only 10 minutes later.

Sorry to be so harsh Gary, but honestly, its not proven that any shark will choose a Hobie versus an Ocean Kayak.

But those of us fishing Ocean Kayaks like to think they will!  :smt044 :smt005

I have to say John has a point. No real proof on peddle system attracting sharks just happened to be someones unlucky or lucky day depending on how you look at it.
We did fish for quit a while after the attack with no further incident. ChuckE was on the identical yak that got hit. I was tempted to put an extra large hook onto his rudder however! Gotta Love This Sport!
I own two Hobies but that day I was on my OK..... :smt044

Thanks guys for the input - I was really starting to wonder about the whole GWS and peddle issue as well. I mean, I am definately not opposed to paddling, shoot I started off in a Tandem malibu 2, paddling that tank around all day, solo, a dozen times, definately is not convenient, but makes paddling the hobie easier. I love the hobie because I get to condition the upper and lower body, depending on the need for the day. Since I hadnt been to the open Blue yet, and never talked to anyone in person about it, I guess I was a little shocked to hear the story when it was told. It sounds reasonable to me, but at the same time, it did make feel a little as if though I would be frowned upon for bringing the peddle system out if I so opted to use it. Hearing that others do in fact use the peddles out there, definately makes me feel better, knowing that I will have that option, and not have to be reminded by everyone that its not very wise. I plan to use both when I do finally go. Thanks again for the clarity.

Geoff
