My wife rented a house in Morro Bay on 4th of July with some friends. I know nothing about the place.  Is it worth bring the yak and gear down? I would probably bring a few surfboards as an option as well. Thanks

Morro Bay is an awsome place for the kayaker,
The bay itself holds some awsome fish.
To the north towards Cayucus the kelp can be excelent for rockfish
to south towards Diablo Canyon is great for Ling and Cabazone
Make sure your aware of the MLPA areas and if the weather is up just fish in the bay.
Anchor or moore in the bay and soak Squid for some great fun with some batrays and shark
Have a great time

A few very large halis were recently pulled out near the harbor entrance but they can also be found in the inner channels along with batrays and leopards (especially in front of the museum). Best launch is here and here. There are other launch spots that look sweet but turn into a slog through deep, stinky mud when the tide goes out... Keep in mind that the current can really rip during big tide swings too. There is a new MPA at the South end of the bay off Los Osos.

You can launch from Spooners Cove in Montana de Oro for rockies. A word of warning: Spooners Cove is a snap to launch at, almost always flat water in the cove but... The mouth of Spooners is at the tip of the point, exposed in all directions. If conditions aren't perfect you will suddenly go from flat water to a total Mix Master once you clear the jaws. Going South isn't an option anymore since the Pt. Buchon MPA.

Virg's is already hooking albies out there. Keep an eye on the commercial boats around the Great America Fish Company restaurant, they will often have "albacore" signs on their boats. I've bought fresh albacore from these guys for a buck a pound right out of their hold.

If you don't bring the yak, there's a bunch of shoreline there you can try.  Halibut can be had from shore there around the sandy areas and rockfish can be had along the jetties there.  There's a few piers inside the harbor that hold some bait.  You can catch bait inside the harbor and fish live bait.

I was there last summer and the bait was crazy thick inside the harbor. You could see bait balls all over the place. I didn't get any bites but I am guessing it was b/c they were stuffed with bait!

Still no luck. I fished near the rocks just inside the mouth of the bay for a bit, 3oz leadhead w/ white scampi and a shrimpfly both with squid. A kid at the bait shop said a guy caught 3 lings off the rocks a few days earlier. Stayed there for about an hour or so then decided to troll looking for a butt in the bay and wanted to head south towards estuary just to check it out. I was only on the water for a few hours. Its a great place and we will definitely go back.

Recap- my first time fishing from a yak I catch a striper and haven't caught anything since (5-6 outings). This is a cruel joke from the gods of fish.

On the other hand. I took my boy out on the yak for the first time to search for otters, seals and big fish. This was the highlight of my trip. My wife decided she wanted to give it a try as well. She stayed out for about 20 minutes, came back and told me she would be getting a kayak of her own. We are now in the market for a tandem that the kids can grow into.
