Capitola Late Repot Sat 6/20

So, got up early and met up with Stoggie for some fishing.

Beach launched, no problems. We paddled straight out to the white buoy, in about 40FOW. Few bites, and one nice rockie for me. Also ended up with a Octopus. Other then that not much. So we paddled over to Soquel Point area. Drifted for a while for NOTHING, lots of boats, didn’t see anything landed. At this point the water is pretty bumpy, like a washing machine, as I was tying on a new rig, looking down, I started to feel SEA SICK! Bummer, it was the washing machine effect.... I haven't got sick since I was a little kid, forgot how bad the feeling is... Anyway, I wasn’t able to shake it, so I baited up my rod, dropped it in the water, and then proceeded to fill my yak with puke! Man, puking in the yak sux, you cant stand up and you can fire up the motor and go to smoother water...

Anyway, I stuck it out for a few more hours, but that sure does zap all the energy out of you, I was really quite burnt after that...

Stoggie being a cool guy, had no problem leaving the washing machine effect and heading for the kelp, we tried the pot holes for nothing, and yes still feeling pretty nasty after the puking event...

A while after that we paddled back to cap, and tried drifting some bait around the moored boats, only a few bites, no fish. We did see one yaker catch a short hali though.

All in all it was a rough day for me once I got sick, but I stuck it out, great learning experience... Got to be smart in these situations, don’t lean over the side to get sick, its too dangerous in that condition, you got to let it go right there in the middle of the yak! No biggie, the scupper holes take it all out to sea!

Stoggie, thanks for hanging with me, and I'm sorry for being lousy company, I know I wasn’t much fun, but that getting sick sure took it out of me. That was my first trip out where it was like a washing machine. The swell doesn’t seem to bother me, but the all over bumpy surface water sure did.... No sweat though, Ill be back at it this weekend!

Anyway here are some pics to spice of this bland report....

Nice knifework porkster.  Glad you got out, and don't sweat the puking.  Im guessing you'll get out with sufficient frequency whereby the middle of july puking will be a distant memory.

good report

Gives a whole new meaning to the term "yak-fishing" huh? I think the worst part about getting seasick is that it saps your energy and you are exhausted for the rest of the day. Hey, at least you got a nice dinner!
Thanks for the report + pics Porky!

Thanks Sin, yeah that's for sure, its really took every bit of energy I had. I felt bad for Stoggie, I was so zapped I couldn.t really talk much. Yup, I was useless the rest of the day, I cleaned my yak and gear, cleaned and ate that fish sanwhich, and then it was lights out for the rest of the day! The worst part was I aspirated a little liquid into my lungs or something and I choked for like 5 minutes after I puked.

BNut the killer fresh fish made up for it!!

Yup, that was me big time last year. Every outing was barf city for me. One
trip in fact was the caused for me to flip my kayak out on the ocean. No
fun at all once the sickness begins and it is not like it will go away anytime
soon until you get back to shore when it stops. Good to see you were
rewarded with a good meal out of it though. See you on the water soon.

Sorry to hear you got sea sick your first time out Porky. Glad you got a fish though.

I use this stuff called Bonine. You can get it over the counter and I've never been sea sick while using this stuff. I take one the night before and one the morning of the outing. Don't even know if I need it anymore but I use it anyway cause getting sick on the water just ruins your day.

Anyway, hope you get out again soon with better results.

It was actually my 5th trip out, but the first day with the washing machine effect....

I'll be at it again sunday, i was thinking MBK, if its nice??

I was at the aquarium yesterday and it looked decent on the kelp edge, saw a few guys out there fishing, id like to get a few rockies this time, last two trips just one fish each time. Still good eats, just craving more!

A slow day for sure.
As Porky said we caught a couple small browns, I let mine go back to the deep successfully. I also caught a octo and after playing with him for a while, let him go as well.

the boats were thick at the point, but I didn't see anyone catching a thing. And it got kinda rough.
Tried the kelp, nada, then around the moored boats and saw a small 'but caught.

I got lots of bites and tried to let out slack to entice them, not wanting the drift to pull the bait away, again lots of hits, but no take down.

Another good day, and porky don't worry about getting sick, lots of guys get sick everytime they go, but we don't let it stop the fun.

It was a good day to play, practice and try new lures. Can't wait till next time.

I used a cheap VHF I bought at West Marine for about $100, (their cheapestWest marine brand)) and was surprised at the reception. All day I was hearing about the paddle outing and jet ski outing from the golden Gate to the bay bridge and even overheard boats in trouble at asilimar beach in monterey, all this from capitola. I also listened to AlanTani who was on the water as well. I think he was around capitola and overheard conversations from boats near natural bridges.Seems to be a better radio than my ICOM M34 that took a crap. Looks like a decent radio. I've never received communication from those distances before

I am out of commission for the next two weeks as I will be in Cancun with the family on vacation, but plan to rent a panga and get out on the water there at least a couple days. Who knows, if there are SOT's available, I will get out on a yak as well. If the drug lords and the swine flu don't get me (should take Fishmaster1 with me as an escort and intrepreter) he's a bad ass dude!

Look forward to seeing you all when I get back, by then I will be ready for another epic trip to SWS, MBK or maybe Point Sur.

Be good brethern

Stoggie

no sweat porky you'll get it under control.I get sick all the time on party boats and even my little 16'er. The drift is what gets me. I have only felt queazy once on the yak but that was with some 8 foot swell and I was tired to begin with. I also keep a few pieces of gum with me sometimes that helps. As for meds. I use the scopolamine pills. The patch is to strong and I feel drugged. Not a good thing one a yak.

yep tying knots and drifting...#1 and #2 on the puke meter! That's why I rig up before you hit the water and have as many leaders, etc ready so I can clip a new one on and go. Actually, untangling a sabiki rig may be the ultra #1
