Hey everybody, I've been a big fan of this site for a long time now, and I am proud to say that I am ready to take the plunge(figuratively, and literally) and get a kayak. Every time I thought I was ready in the past something always happened, &... well... it didn't happen. I have 5 grand set aside, and am looking for the best bang for my buck, but also want the most informative lessons I can find before I buy. A class where I can demo would be a big plus. I know already that a basic paddling class is a must, seeing as I have a 7 year old daughter, and I am a single parent(can't risk her future for my sense of adventure), but any advice you may be able to lend will be greatly appreciated. I live in SF and would prefer to get a lesson or two sooner, rather than later(like early july). I'm pretty sure I want to get an OK T13, but I'm wondering if I may find that I fit another boat better. I am 6'0 and 170#. Thanks in advance for the info.

WELCOME  :smt003
Others on the board are more informed as far as classes go, but it would be smart to attend a demo day - not sure of dates in the bay area...
However, my two pennies are also to make sure you are CPR/First Aid Certified as well.  Always a good skill to be current on!

see ya on the water!

Good advice New Chick, actually hadn't thought of that, but I'll put it on my agenda. :smt002

It passes most people's minds, but it's one of the best skills you can have - whether you are on the water, or off!

I have 5 grand set aside

:smt007  :smt007   Put some of that towards a second yak for the little miss.

Sounds like you've done your homework and are going about it the right way.  Good idea taking a class or three. :smt003   Lucky for you, you've got a couple options for safety classes.  Sean White/SBD is in the process of rescheduling his class that was supposed to be this weekend (uncooperating weather) - it will most likely be mid-July.  MBK is also set to have one during the middle of next month.  Either will be a little drive but worth your time.  A paddling class, like you already mentioned, would also be a good idea.  A CPR/FA class, as NCK mentioned, is never a bad idea either.

You've also got the right idea by demoing, demoing, and more demoing. :smt003   There isn't a boat out there that fits everybody.  There are plenty of places to demo.  Aquan is probably not that far and they have many different yaks to test.

Best of luck, look forward to catching up with you on the water, and WTTM!

Michael

Welcome,

Single parenthood certainly will modify your modus operandi, that attitude of watching out for yourself because someone else is counting on you should never leave your mind,

Safety first, being prepared really doesn't get in the way of anything, after that it's all GOOD.

Sounds like you've got it all covered as far as classes/demos first.

At 7 a small second yak might be a good idea, actually they're some of the easiest to find used.

you're pretty standard height and weight wise so most yaks will work for you. You just need to demo some b/c they all have a different feel. Comfort is key, your going to be sitting in it for 5 plus hours

Planning on test riding some yaks this weekend. I'm gonna go ahead and get a rack for my roof before I go (any suggestions?). I would hate to fall in love with one and have no way to transport it home :smt010. I've been waiting with great anticipation for quite some time. Gonna hit aquan sports first I think. You gonna be there this weekend Mooch? I need experienced sot kayak angling advice as far as what type of deck layout I'll need. Mostly looking for versatility, as I plan to start with freshwater, and eventually move to the bay, and ocean as my confidence, & skills progress. Again all suggestions are welcome, and greatly appreciated. :smt001

What vehicle?  If you have factory rails already and are looking to mount on those, check out inno racks.  http://www.rv-inno.com/

I hate the Yakima round bars.  So I tried out some Thule's for my ML350, didn't like em.  Then found the Inno brand racks.  They are frigging awesome - compatible w Thule but far more convenient and better lock design, imho.

See if Aquan carries em otherwise, Road N Rack in San Jose on Camden does.
