Have read better sensitivity with braided vs mono, better hookset, and a few other good reasons...
been doing a search for this and been drawing a blank...wanting to spool up 35# braided with 20# seaguar fluoro and was looking for imput...read posts about it, just can't find it!

there was discussion as to length of fluoro...mono length I've heard 20 ft, 40, 60...even 120 ft...seems like it's tippet material as if u were doing fly...

reel is a Penn 320 gti graphite I picked up yesterday for $25.00  :smt003

I'm assuming uni/uni...??? Thanks guys and gals... :smt001

I would put mono backing on that reel is going to take a ton of braid $$$$$$$$

yeah I'm looking @ dia looks like 6lb test power pro spectra (man its skinny)its actually 30# now that I'm looking...but I'm not casting, strait jigging baby...does it still mater?...it's a large reel says it take 330 yrds of 20# mono...maybe I will just stick with what I know... :smt003

All though I was checking out that gorilla braid, its a larger dia braided line and comes in 300 yrd shot...

Thx mickfish

I just tied my first braid to mono knot and used the albright.  It was easier that I anticipated although I woudn't want to do it on the water.

Last summer, the last time on the salt ( :smt009 ), I hooked into what I assumed was some sort of mammal and cut the line - leaving me with about half a spool.  I just filled it with 30lb mono because it's what I had.  I'll probably replace it 20lb when I pick some up.

Norm showed me a knot to tie mono to braid that's easier than an albright.  You can easily do it on the water.  The only problem with it is that you can only use a leader-length strip of mono on it.  If you want to put over like 10' of mono, use the albright.  I don't know the name of the knot, but I'll try to describe it:

1) Cut off 4-6' of mono and run it next to the braid so the tag ends are facing in opposite directions.

2) Make a loop out of both lines with the tag end of mono on one side and tag end of braid on the other.

3) Take the entire length of the mono with the tag end of the braid and wrap it 3 times through the loop.

4) Goober it up with some spit or something and pull the tag ends taught.

5) You can trim the tags right up to the knot.

This knot is just like square knot, but you pass the tag end through the loop 3 times instead of only once like the square.  Its super strong.  I've tied it a bunch in my boat.  Like I said, I've got no idea of the name.  I call it Norm's knot.

I was very "knot-inept" so I've been on these sites recently trying to learn these.

Animated knot site rules...thx...I like animation... :smt003

I'm assuming most u guys use braided line???

I've never...the braided I have tied to mono "not like sizes"...

Whats the braid of "choice" for jigging lings...???

I'm goin to put the braid I have on a smaller reel or maybe take it back and trade up larger dia braid...

My cuda 350 just showed up so I'm doing the "noodle" thing...plus going back over my bookmarks from earlier posts on FF/power installs... :smt003 :smt003

Thx for all the input...

I use the J knot. After using this knot exclusively on all my braind-mono connections since the beginning of the year I've really come to like it. My go to was always a uni-uni which was nice but not quite as strong as I wanted. Problem I saw was all the stress was right where the mono wrapped around the braid and made a 90 degree turn. When it got really tight under pressure it constricted the single wrap of mono and consistently broke right there. I'd looked for a new knot that made sense physically, was proven to hold well, and wasn't too hard to tie. What I came up with was the J Knot.

The nice thing about the J Knot is that it doesn't require the mono to make a 90 degree turn around the braid and create that constricting point. Instead it has a few turns that it takes together with the braid meaning the turns are more rounded out overall. It's really easy to tie and pretty low profile so slips through the guides nicely.

It does make sense that the mono would break at the 90 degree turn. The North. Am. Fishing Club site tests different knots against each other on the their series, Knot Wars (someone else posted this on another thread) but it doesn't look like they've done the J - & they probably won't because it was apparently developed by Stren and Knot Wars is sponsored by Berkley.  http://www.fishingclub.com/ExtraContent/ExtraContentHome.aspx

Here's an article with good diagrams of the Stren Knot & the J knot:  http://www.saltwatersportsman.com/article.jsp?ID=21012025

I'm gonna have to try the J for the reasons Z mentioned. Like the Surgeon's, it's limited to leaders since you have to run the whole leader through the knot, but it seems ideal for that purpose.

I think a lot of folks use Power Pro. Personally, I use it because it seems to be the most inexpensive brand (of decent quality).  BTW, Sports Authority (at least the one in SF) has 20% off all fishing line - hurry 'cause it ends today! I think I saw a sign saying lures are 2 for 1, also. When I saw that, I had to . . . just walk away . . .  :smt003

Although I haven't tried to tie it OTW, +1 for the albright. Quick, simple and flows through the guides with no problem.
