Fished Monterey today, launched about 10 am from the Coast Guard Pier. I was supposed to go surf fishing on the beach with my brother-in-law but he canceled since we're going to be in San Francisco tomorrow at a builders convention which displays new products. Was planning on launching in PG but I cruised by the Coast Guard Pier first making the usual rounds just checking everything out. Got out the truck and surveyed the horizon. The Monterey Sherriffs Dept. dive team were there practicing. Saw a strange looking type of jet boat in the parking lot as well. I saw the usual rental kayaks out in about and then I saw someone fishing off the beaten path. A silhouette on the water, grabbed my binocs and sure enough it's my buddy Ernie jigging up mackerel. Met up with him and we fished for a couple of hours drifting live macks, no bites. Ernie went in and I stayed out on a mission for the ling I didn't catch the day before at Stillwater. Fishing was a little slow, I caught some gophers and coppers, then on the outside of a kelp bed caught a sea trout. A little later I caught a nice black and towards the end of the day an underling (19''). Kept the greenling and black, everything else was released. I ran into the local jetty fishing expert Joe in his rowboat and caught up with the latest goings on with him and also BSed with Blake (BKayaking) for a while when I saw him fishing the kelp beds behind Cannery Row. I was on the water from 10-5:30 straight. Long day but I had a blast. Plan on going out again most likely Friday or Saturday.

Sailfish, I didn't take the time to inquire about any details because I wanted to get on the water but I thought it looked interesting and decided it was definitely worth a couple of quick pics.                                                                                                                                                   Keo, I try to fish somewhere in the Monterey Bay area at least once a week, so far this week it's been three days straight. So I'm always trying to get on the water, I'm most likely going out again this Saturday. There's a Ocean Kayak Scrambler XT w/rod holders for rent from a place over here, and I'm not sure but I think Monterey Bay Kayaks might have some kayaks you can fish from for rent. I rented it once back in the day. So whenever you can make it down this way let me know. I can 99% guarantee you'll catch fish. There's a couple of pretty cool homies down here that I usually fish with too so I know we'll have a good time. Let me know brotha

Where is the place with the fishing Scrambler XT?

I Likey fish
Took my 79 year old father out in a Malibu 2 last Sunday from MBK. I was told that while they demo fishing kayaks, you can't fish from them - but they will have the fishin kayaks for rent during the tourney  - Wierd!

I am planning on taking my father in law out in Monterey on Saturday. Originally MBK told me they don't allow fishing from their rentals because of the all of the sancuaries and protected areas. I was able to get a rental for fishing for my father in law with proof of my yak having GPS and having the sancuary points marked off on it.

I think they will be reasonable for a rental if there someone in the group knows the area and has GPS. At least that's what I found.

LilRiverMan, The kayak is at Lovers Point/Adventures by the Sea but you've kind of got to finesse the situation. If I remember right there was mixed feelings about fishing from it by the staff. Don't go to the main Cannery Row location and ask, just go to Lovers Point, there's a booth there and rent it without too many questions. I remember some staff at the Cannery Row spot said No, then others said Yes, then some said yes but you can't use bait or you have to bring it already cut. I only rented it once about two years ago and there was a young kid working the booth that didn't care what I did. So just rent it and do your thing w/out stirring up the pot too much
