You can launch right at the store. Its a short walk (across the parking lot) to the beach. Allen, Aaron, and Andy have the intel on were to go. I do wanna hit it up in the next few weeks to make sure you post a hookup

i went out there once with a guide out of MBK it was very informational i loved it i did get some sort of discount because i had my own gear (Kayak, fishing gear and clothes etc) i forget the guides name i went with but a great guy very polite.
there were about 5 of us kayak fishermen all were noobs but we all caught fish not vert big but still had a lot of action within the few hours we fished
like they said before we launched from the back of the store then proceeded through the bay and boats basically right behind bubba gump shrimp restaurant nice little paddle and very protected any where in that area is great for beginners nice little paddle and great scenery stay to the outside of teh kelp and thats where the fish are hopefully

MBK does get plenty of boat traffic, but it is pretty flat and protected from swell and wind. The launch is usually flat and easy.If it's too big to launch there you may want to reconsider launching at all that day. Plenty of kelp to pothole along cannery row, sandy bottom for halibut near the shop north to the hotel and off san carlos, beach just north of the jetty. The red can on out usually produces sand dabs and a few rockfish on isolated rock piles and small reefs.Definitely a great launch for beginners.

The fishing there in my opinion is that of Santa Cruz, hit or miss. If you want to go out for sand dabs I havent found A better spot yet. The rock cod bite could be a little spotty unless you find the reef NE of the red buoy. You will limit out on decent fish. The halibut fishing in the pass has produced nice fish, I have yet to catch one. :smt009.. Good luck hope to see you on the water soon....Andy ... Oh ya and on A nice day the landing can be VERY productive for eye candy... :smt007

so is it it worth the drive from sanat cruz to fish this area this weekend?

So if i leave the launch area at MBK, I head south right? Fish canery row?

id be happy with rockies, but ive never fished this area and i have no idea where the reef is you speak of?

Also, never fished for sand dabs? Are the good eats? How to you identify them?

Some of these are really your own judgment calls, no one can advise you on  :smt002  And sometimes you need to just get out and see for yourself.  Tips are often just pointing in the right direction, not an exact how-to if you will. But these are really good tips (really!) Hookup with someone and get out there and try it!  There is no such thing as a sure thing while fishing anyways!
