I figure we can launch at the kayak rental place, if conditions suck outside the harbor we can work the inner rock wall.

thoughts?

If you are up to it why not go for a real adventure and fish the Bean. I will be crossing my fingers for good weather on the opener and will surely be there if she cooperates.

First Ocean adventure on the new kayaks, I want easy for this one to get the feel of it before attempting Bean, plus we want to practice more surf launches before Bean as well.

I am out of town Thursday and Friday of next week, but should be home around 5pm Friday night to check in.

BTW, i am still trying to figure out where to park.  I emailed the harbor master and have not heard back.

If you want free easy parking, after you are off the highway, and you go through the habour entrance, go right at the stop sign. Then go right again into the first lot on the right. Free parking all day long and you're very close to HMBK rentals. You're also right behind the bait shops.

I am looking at fishing out of Half Moon Bay this Saturday for my first try at rockfishing and was wondering if others would be out there. I am trying to get my brother to come along and my cousin Jeff (Jeffrm20) but wanted to see if others with knowledge of this area would be there. We are all rookies and I want to remain safe and have a good chance at catching a few fish. I welcome recommendations on alternate launch sites for beginners if you have any.

Thanks,
Ray

Thanks for the response guys. I hope to see you out there. I am planning on launching around 7:00 AM or earlier if I can get my brother up and out of his house on time. Do you have any recommendation on where to launch. I looked at the places to launch link and there appears to be a secret launch spot in the harbor area. I will have my radio tuned to Channel 69.

Ariel - Is Bean Hollow more protected than HMB? I thought it was the opposite and not a place for rookies, but figured I would ask. Sounds like a very fishy place. I enjoyed the reports and pics from there last year.

Bean Hollow is definitely not a place for rookies. It was just one of my options of plcaes I was going to fish for the opener. I am leaning towards HMB so i can kick it with you guys.

Yeah, I figured as much. It will be great to have you along to show us the ropes if you don't mind.

--There's no secret launch. People do it from the base of the green pier and also the far west parking lot. But the paddle to get out of the harbor from there isn't really any shorter.
The conditions are looking pretty good. The route most people would go is to hug the jetty after you go west (right). You will see some breakers as you paddle up ahead. Just stay close to the jetty, (unless you want to go out there and fish on the rocks the waves are breaking on). Then what most people do is keep going all the way to the main reef. Duane caught the derby winner last time a quarter mile west of the biggest rocks (Sail Rock).
There will be a bunch of butt surfers and SUP's at the first rock  (Mushroom Rock). I lost a big ling just outside of it at the last derby because I didn't change my leader after it bounced on the rocks for a while. Please don't make that mistake. I know a deep spot inside of it also, if you swing by I'll show you where it is.
Low tides about 9, I love fishing the incoming tide. I think the fishing will be good since there's been no pressure. Also there's been no wind so the temp. of the water has warmed up so the fish are eating more. I don't normally surf with my radio, but maybe I will saturday so I can lurk some more.

If I can finally purchase my wet suit and radio Ill be there. Sounds like just the first ocean experience I need, a mix of semi rooks like me and some experienced will make me feel more cumfortable. I know the area pretty well and would say the closest launch to ware you can park is half way to mavericks between some houses. But post ware youll launch and hopefully Ill be there.
