So I'm planning a trip for next weekend (6-5 through 6-7) for pigeon pt. near the lighthouse. I've only been rockfish fishing above Bodega Bay. Has anyone been down there? Is it a good launch? Jigs? Shrimp Flies? Scampi? Colors? I've only been rockcod fishing for about 3 years now. still learning. Any info would be much appreciated! THANKS!!!!

OK cool. so if its too crazy out there we were also thinking about driving down to Moss landing or even Monterey Bay. any info on those places?

Be sure to check the regs & be aware that rockfish, Cabezone, greenling & Ling season doesn't open NORTH of PP until 6/13/09.
Kep an eye on the wind forecasts.
Tackle-wise, any of the usual RF stuff should work.

There are only beach launches in that area.
Practice your surf launches & your landings especially. It is not a newb-friendly area. Have a VHF & compass, plus whatever safety gear you think you'll need. Cell Phones do not work in some areas of the coast there.

I have a radio site there but haven't been for a while. as I remember, the beach is a bit rocky, but there is a small sandy beach on the south side of the point that might do. Just drive up to the hostel and check it out. As an idea, it would be great to rent one of the bunkrooms at the hostel and be able to just wke up step outside and launch

Pigeon Point has a protected beach that's great for launching/landing in a sandy cove just south of the lighthouse.  Park your car in the parking lot or along the road just outside of the youth hostel.  There's a steep stairway that you can use to portage your yak and gear down to the beach.

Until June 13th you have to fish south of the light house.  I've never really caught much in that area except for pesky kingfish.  We did go crabbing there and the catch was hit or miss for Dungies and Rock Crab.  Rumor has it that there's a reef south of the light house but I've never ventured that far south.  As was mentioned, Ano Nuevo is south and around the bend...GWS territory.
My goal in life is to be as good of a person my dog already thinks I am.

what SandMan said...

i was out there a wk ago and the fishing was slow.  i saw a number of party boats though.
saw Queen of Hearts roaming around just north of the lighthouse.  remember...until June 13, fishing anywhere above 37°11′N is illegal...the coordinates for PP lighthouse is 37°10′54″N.  fishing just north of the lighthouse is ok, but it could be very tricky if you don't have GPS.
there are some structures about 3/4~1 mile down south.  you will need FF to read the bottom structure or just follow the party boats (if there is any).

***the beach/park opens at 8am and closes at sunset.***

!!!note: try not to park in the parking lot. unload the gears first near the parking lot entrance and park your car down the street. Pls be courteous to other visitors!!!

Definitely one of the hairiest places I've fished...can get windy quick and is exposed to several directions, cell phones are spotty and I wouldn't rely on one there, few safe alternate take outs in high surf, and like many of the places I've been fishing lately... Whitey.
