Is Sacramento to far to drive for you?  If not check this out:

That's where I bought my Hobie Adventure. Their prices are as good as anyone.

Mel Cotton's didn't have them in stock?  They have a decent selection at the start of the season but don't seem to replenish their stock as they sell them. :smt011

Personally, I purchased my Adventure from CCK in Oakland and then my Outback from Windtoys in Santa Rosa.

Kayak Connection in Santa Cruz Harbor has excellent hobie service.  I'm sure you can squeeze a deal from them.  I've gotten a few boats from them at a decent discount.  AND they are a really nice shop

When I purchased mine a few weeks ago, I had a hard time finding any in stock in the color ("golden papaya"...okay, yellow) I wanted locally, so I ended up going through kayakfishingsupplies.com. Brent there gave me a good deal on a package, along with 15% off all other gear. They have some good fishing packages, and  did a great job with all installations--which I appreciated since I'm not particularly handy, and was anxious about drilling holes in my new yak. :smt107 If you can't find anything locally, you might want to check them. Good luck!

one thing to note is that if you order one online to ship to you, it might actually be cheaper than buying one here because you're not paying the ridiculous CA sales tax.

True, but supporting your local economy is always a good idea.  And if purchased locally, if something goes wrong, it will be easier taking it back to have issues tended to, especially if under warranty.

Just food for thought.

Wanted to send a big "thank you" to you guys for your help on where to buy a kayak. Your suggestions were very helpful and appreciated.  Fortunately, my patience paid off (and "sailfish" suggesting them) I ended up driving to Adventure Sports\Kayak City in Sacramento after speaking with Carl and buy one today.  I got the color i wanted (the hard to find papaya\yellow) but changed my mind and got the Outback model.  Decided the extra stability was more important to me than a little more speed.  Was hard for me to sacrifice the weight savings but bit the bullet on it. What sealed the deal was they had them on sale.  I don't know how long the sale is but the savings was enough for me to drive almost three hundred miles round trip!  Best deal I've seen in two years researching.

My Experiences:
When i first posted my question, i had already checked out Mel Cottons in San Jose.  They were out of the Revolution.  I didn't go back due to a perceived bad experience.  They didn't seem interested in helping anyone at all.  After hanging around for a while we finally tracked down a rep. to ask if they had any in stock.  Guy seemed disgruntled to tell us they didn't have any and we'd have to pay the shipping to order it.  Probably just a bad day or possibly they get jerked around a lot dealing with people that ask about Hobie's.  Then drove to Kayak Connections in Santa Cruz.  They were nice but only had red available in Elk Horn Slough.  After noticing all the shark attacks on kayakers over the years were red kayaks.  I wanted to stay away from red ones.  This may be a coincidence since everyone seems to stock red more than the other colors.   I did buy the turbo fins and the sail rudder from them.  Then I drove drove down to Elkorn.  Man, driving down there using Hwy 1 BLOWS!  Nice enough experience at the store but they didn't have the color i wanted.  I will compliment them for willing to split the shipping cost with me.  A nice gesture but not enough for me to pull the trigger and buy one from them.

Side Note:
Hearing rumours Hobie is doing a pretty big redesign on the Revolution for 2010.  Might be adding some more stability to them.  Anyone have any info on this?

Thanks again for the suggestions and to Carl.  Without your help, I wouldn't be a kayak owner today...

There have been some bad experiences with them so I'm glad to see it worked for you.

Not just a bad day - I had the same experience. :smt013   I'll be damned if I'm paying for the shipping.  The attitudes of some in their kayak department is garbage! :smt011   I now only visit them to take advantage of their 20% off coupon that they put out every so often.
