There is at least one fish in Plumas County, and I caught him. He was apparently camera shy.
debra and I left Ptown Fri at 11:00 am and headed up the hill yaks in tow. We spies Thunderheads way before Donner and withstood an awesome Tstorm on the pass going up 89.

We checked into Graeagle (highly recommended)

and lit out for Gold Lake.

No fish but excellent paddle.

Next morning we headed all the way over to 395 then north. With my trusty Gem trails of California book in hand we hit the promised land. We 4-wheeled yak trailer and all to Hallelujah mtn famous for Quartz scepters and citrine.

Was harassed by 5-6 pitbulls, deb would not leave the car. I picked for a half hour and got this:

F'in dog pack would not leave me alone so we left.

Saw this off in the distance

We parked the truck and hiked up.

SURREAL!
That afternoon we pressed further into Gold Lakes Basin and launched at Salmon Lake. Spectacular scenerey.

What's this?

Fishing was not great. Would go back in a heartbeat.

Thank you for sharing the experience and beautiful pictures with us.  Nice yaks by the way.

Thats so cool. I didnt think anyone knew about Peterson Peak. We have hunted smoky quartz crystals there many times. There is a claim on top behind the peak that is run by a firefighter in Reno. He has found some huge sceptertips up there and he let us go through his tailings and we found tons of small points. Watch out for big rattlers there in summer at night. One went right under one of the chairs at night when we were having campfire. Cool but scary. Next time you are up by Gold lake try tye Lower Salmon lake its really cool too. Great report and the pics are fantastic. We saw the thunderheads rolling to the north and thought someone is getting hammered somewhere.

Great pics!

That place looks a little "The Hills Have Eyes"-ish.  :smt010

I love it up there. Did you stop by Bassetts station for burgers they are great. Next time hit up the Yuba river. My wife and I were there 2yrs ago for our honeymoon and caught little planters all day. Im not a fan of Sardine lake, Ive never even seen a fish in there.

Thanks for the report and pics.  There is a lake a short (but uphill) walk from Salmon lake.  If you are able to carry your kayaks that far it is worth the effort(I take a playboat to fish from on that lake).  Consistent action and lots of holdovers.  I will look for the name of the lake when I get home.

Thanks again for the report.

Who needs fish with scenery like that?

I am also a MAJOR rockhound.

I have several future vacations that revolve around Public Access Opal and other mines in Nevada and Oregon, as well as Southern California.

Cool combo trip, fishing and collecting. We found some very interesting gathering north and east of Pyramid this winter. Let's hook up.
