I am thinking of hunting fish on Monday and was wondering if anyone was out in the FT Bragg area this weekend.
I heard there was a huge alage bloom in the area with 5' vis and was wondering how far north it is. Can anyone tell me if the alage bloom is around Ft Bragg? Thanks.

We were at Albion today, and although the conditions were perfect, the water vis was very poor and nobody was catching fish.  So I would say Albion at least.  Some friends were in a PB north of Point Arena and caught no fish either.

My Mendo friends actually did not think it was an algae bloom but thought it was krill.  Actually, while I was fishing today (Northern Boy hookup) I pulled up what I thought was some red gunk on my jig when it turned out to be all these weird little creatures that I now think were krill. (?)  I thought the fish might be stuffed on these things...?  Now you are saying this is an algae bloom.

A PB guy said nobody was catching fish either although they got them yesterday (!).

Does anyone have the real biology on what is going on?  What causes the bloom?  Fertilizer runoff?   Or is it natural?

Red stuff on the line... glassy water... reminds me of trolling for salmon.

If you're not living on the edge - you're taking up too much space!

Its natural, happens once in a while. The red alage is teh alage of the red tide and sucks all the oxygen out of the water to 20 feet or so. I heard that there is a big crab die off in Tomalas bay from it.

I ab/fished Fri @ Russian gulch viz was 20-25, fishing was off the hook...If I hadn't been riding with someone else I would've limited out on some nice fat reds/lings/caps...as it was I did limit on caps, one was 21 in, same for the red...and the abbing was most excellent... :smt044 :smt044 :smt044

Going to hit it again tomorrow with my dive partners WAF points from today... :smt003
